I know from first-hand experience that it takes months for some people to emerge enough from the fog of trauma to even start thinking about recovery.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I don\u2019t like the word \u201crecovery\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It makes it sound like things can \u2014 and do \u2014 go back to the way they were before the fire (or the hurricane or the flood \u2014 pick your own mass climate disaster).<\/p>\n<p>But they don\u2019t. They can\u2019t. Lahaina is gone. Forever.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, something will come back \u2014 probably cookie-cutter multi-million dollar condos that the former residents can\u2019t even dream of affording. But Lahaina is gone. Its residents can move forward, but they can\u2019t \u201crecover\u201d. There is no going back.<\/p>\n<p>And \u201cmoving forward\u201d itself a long and cruelly painful process, and one during which I personally came to understand that the \u201csystem\u201d \u2014 everything from FEMA to insurance companies to the tax system to banks to the government to the legal system \u2014 isn\u2019t\u00a0<em>designed\u00a0<\/em>to help you, the disaster victim.<\/p>\n<p>It isn\u2019t that the system doesn\u2019t work.\u00a0<em>It works exactly as designed.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s just not designed to help\u00a0<em>you<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>It helps others, or maybe no one at all, but if you manage to get what you need from the system, it\u2019s almost by accident, or unintentional, or a byproduct of helping someone else.<\/p>\n<p>I know a lot of people reading this will say, \u201cyou\u2019re overreacting\u201d or \u201cyou just had a bad experience\u201d.
