Thoughts on Proclamation 7463, or \u2018Digital McCarthyism\u2019 on the Move<\/a><\/h3>\n

As I say, things are always worse than they seem.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n

On September 14, 2001, George W. Bush, exercising \u201cthe power vested in [him] as President of the Untied States,\u201d issued\u00a0Proclamation 7463<\/a>, a \u201cDeclaration of National Emergency by Reason of Certain Terrorist Attacks.\u201d That got the ball rolling on the construction of the surveillance state.<\/p>\n

At the time, the extreme measure seemed justified. Three days earlier, the United States had suffered its most devastating terrorist attack in history.<\/p>\n

But how about this: On\u00a0September 8, 2023, Joe Biden quietly renewed<\/a>\u00a0the Bush era emergency measures for another year. I was told there would be no math, but that makes 22 years and counting that a vast array of surveillance assets have been mobilized against\u2014against whom?<\/p>\n

When George W. Bush was president, they were focused on al Qaeda and kindred groups. Today?<\/p>\n

Today, that fearsome governmental power is still assembled. Increasingly, however, it seems to be focused against those the administration fears or dislikes.<\/p>\n

Traditional Catholics<\/a>, for example, or\u00a0parents<\/a>\u00a0upset with their local school boards.<\/p>\n

At the head of the list of potential \u201cdomestic extremists\u201d are the tens of millions of people who support Donald Trump (not to mention, of course, Trump himself). A couple of days ago, Hillary Clinton took to CNN (it would be CNN) to say that something needed to be done to silence those misguided people who supported Trump. \u201cMaybe,\u201d\u00a0she said<\/a>, \u201cthere needs to be a formal deprogramming\u201d of MAGA \u201ccult members.\u201d<\/p>\n

Apparently the FBI agrees. According to\u00a0a much-cited article in Newsweek<\/a>, the agency has created a \u201cnew category of extremists that it seeks to track and counter: Donald Trump\u2019s army of MAGA followers.\u201d That article suggests that the FBI is struggling to combat genuine threats without attacking people who simply support Trump and other populist candidates…<\/p>\n
