And, it usually has many answers from various sciences, each having their own methods and standards. When someone tells you, \u201cthe science says,\u201d be skeptical. They are usually being paid to say what they are about to say or at least have been thoroughly indoctrinated by others who are paid. There is never just one answer to any supposedly scientific question.<br \/>\n-Kurt Cobb (<a class=\"af mx\" href=\"http:\/\/resourceinsights.blogspot.com\/2020\/09\/why-am-i-feeling-so-anxious-end-of.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">Why am I feeling so anxious? The end of modernism arrives<\/a>)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fh fi fj fk fl\">\n<div class=\"ab ca\">\n<div class=\"ch bg et eu ev ew\">\n<blockquote class=\"mq mr ms\">\n<p id=\"9431\" class=\"ls lt mt lu b lv lw lx ly lz ma mb mc mu me mf mg mv mi mj mk mw mm mn mo mp fh bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Unfortunately, there are many other misconceptions about science. One of the most common misconceptions concerns the so-called \u201cscientific proofs.\u201d Contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as a scientific proof\u2026all scientific knowledge is\u00a0<em class=\"fo\">tentative<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em class=\"fo\">provisional<\/em>, and nothing is final. There is no such thing as final proven knowledge in science. The currently accepted theory of a phenomenon is simply the best explanation for it\u00a0<em class=\"fo\">among all available alternatives<\/em>. Its status as the accepted theory is contingent on what other theories are available and might suddenly change tomorrow if there appears a better theory or new evidence that might challenge the accepted theory. No knowledge or theory (which embodies scientific knowledge) is final.<br \/>\n-Satoshi Kanazawa (<a class=\"af mx\" href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/the-scientific-fundamentalist\/200811\/common-misconceptions-about-science-i-scientific-proof\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">Common Misconceptions About Science I: \u201cScientific Proof\u201d<\/a>)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fh fi fj fk fl\">\n<div class=\"ab ca\">\n<div class=\"ch bg et eu ev ew\">\n<blockquote class=\"mq mr ms\">\n<p id=\"4616\" class=\"ls lt mt lu b lv lw lx ly lz ma mb mc mu me mf mg mv mi mj mk mw mm mn mo mp fh bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">In short, we can never be 100% that our perception of reality is accurate, and scientific experiments are virtually impossible to totally and completely control. Further, science often uses inductive logic, and it relies on probabilities to draw conclusions. All of this prevents science from ever proving anything with absolute certainty. That does not, however, mean that science is untrustworthy, or that you can reject it whenever you like. Science tells us what is most likely true given the current evidence, but it is a skeptical process that always acknowledges the possibility of being wrong.<br \/>\n-Fallacy Man (<a class=\"af mx\" href=\"https:\/\/thelogicofscience.com\/2016\/04\/19\/science-doesnt-prove-anything-and-thats-a-good-thing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">Science doesn\u2019t prove anything, and that\u2019s a good thing<\/a>)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fh fi fj fk fl\">\n<div class=\"ab ca\">\n<div class=\"ch bg et eu ev ew\">\n<blockquote class=\"mq mr ms\">\n<p id=\"be99\" class=\"ls lt mt lu b lv lw lx ly lz ma mb mc mu me mf mg mv mi mj mk mw mm mn mo mp fh bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The answers you get depend on the questions you ask\u2026What man sees depends both upon what he looks at and also upon what his previous visual-conception experience has taught him to see\u2026Observation and experience can and must drastically restrict the range of admissible scientific belief, else there would be no science. But they cannot alone determine a particular body of such belief. An apparently arbitrary element, compounded of personal and historical accident, is always a formative ingredient of the beliefs espoused by a given scientific community at a given time\u2026Because scientists are reasonable men, one or another argument will ultimately persuade many of them. But there is no single argument that can or should persuade them all. Rather than a single group conversion, what occurs is an increasing shift in the distribution of professional allegiances\u2026The competition between paradigms is not the sort of battle that can be resolved by proofs.<br \/>\n-Thomas S. That is the refrain from some to argue for what IS and what IS NOT \u2018true\u2019 or \u2018factual\u2019 in this world of social media edicts and memes (and associated self-created echo chambers), especially regarding fake news, climate change\/global warming, pandemics, politics, and life in general.<\/p>\n<p id=\"f94f\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph ls lt fo lu b lv lw lx ly lz ma mb mc md me mf mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp fh bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The idea that science provides us with \u2018objective proof\u2019 about issues is a common error I\u2019ve encountered time and time again. It is held for many reasons, primary among them may be the \u2018politicisation\u2019 of the notion; that is, the use of \u2018science\u2019 by politicians and others to reinforce what are for all intents and purposes desired goals\/policies\/actions\/narratives\/etc., and their insistence about science providing definitive support. We are certainly seeing this more and more with competing narratives regarding Covid-19 and what should and should not be done to address certain concerns.<\/p>\n<p id=\"b746\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph ls lt fo lu b lv lw lx ly lz ma mb mc md me mf mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp fh bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">My enlightenment, as it were, regarding scientific \u2018proof\u2019 and associated beliefs came in two parts during my\u00a0<a class=\"af mx\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uwo.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">university education<\/a>. First was a poignant discussion with a\u00a0<a class=\"af mx\" href=\"https:\/\/anthropology.utoronto.ca\/people\/faculty\/david-smith\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">professor<\/a>\u00a0providing feedback on a paper I had written and used the idea of science proving something to support my conclusion. He stated rather bluntly that \u201c\u2018proof\u2019 is only relevant in mathematics and jurisprudence, not science.\u201d He then went on to explain the concept in greater detail, but it was that short statement that has stuck with me and altered my view of \u2018objective science\u2019 as \u2018proof\u2019 of various beliefs.<\/p>\n<p id=\"fa41\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph ls lt fo lu b lv lw lx ly lz ma mb mc md me mf mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp fh bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The second tipping point for me was during a presentation on human intelligence by the psychology department of the university (I had become interested in the subject as I explored human evolution via physical anthropology classes and sat in on a presentation by a guest speaker). As I recall, the visiting professor asked somewhat rhetorically what was the definition of intelligence we could use to explore the concept. After entertaining a few responses (all of which were different) he stressed that if we were to ask 100 psychologists such a question, we would get back 100 different answers: there was no agreed upon definition. One\u2019s particular perspective \u2018coloured\u2019 what was important and observed.<\/p>\n<p id=\"62da\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph ls lt fo lu b lv lw lx ly lz ma mb mc md me mf mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp fh bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">There were also a handful of texts I read that impacted my beliefs. Some of the most pertinent ones were:\u00a0<a class=\"af mx\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Structure_of_Scientific_Revolutions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">The Structure of Scientific Revolutions<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"af mx\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Mismeasure_of_Man\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">The Mismeasure of Man<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"af mx\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ever_Since_Darwin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">Ever Since Darwin<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"af mx\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Interpretation_of_Cultures\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">The Interpretation of Cultures<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"fe60\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph ls lt fo lu b lv lw lx ly lz ma mb mc md me mf mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp fh bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The two experiences described above and the books I read impacted my interests at the time and I set off exploring other ideas and perspectives, getting into\u00a0<a class=\"af mx\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Deconstruction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">deconstructivism<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"af mx\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">philology<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"af mx\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hermeneutics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">hermeneutics<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"af mx\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dialectic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">dialectics<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"af mx\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Epistemology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">epistemology<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"af mx\" href=\"https:\/\/www.diffen.com\/difference\/Objective_vs_Subjective\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">objectivity versus subjectivity<\/a>, and\u00a0<a class=\"af mx\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Skepticism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">skepticism<\/a>. More recently I\u2019ve explored the somewhat related subjects of\u00a0<a class=\"af mx\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Complexity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">complexity<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"af mx\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cognition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">cognition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"a7a0\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph ls lt fo lu b lv lw lx ly lz ma mb mc md me mf mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp fh bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">All of these \u2018colour\u2019 my belief system and my arguments regarding \u2018collapse\u2019. Do I know for certain some of the things I pontificate about. Absolutely not. And I hope I couch my rhetoric in words such as \u2018likely\u2019, \u2018evidence\u2019, \u2018probably\u2019, etc. to demonstrate my uncertainty. Because when we get right down to it, not one of us can be certain about the future and our beliefs about it. As\u00a0<a class=\"af mx\" href=\"https:\/\/quoteinvestigator.com\/2013\/10\/20\/no-predict\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">several people have been credited with stating<\/a>: It\u2019s difficult to make predictions, especially about the future. We live within complex systems made up of complex systems that, because of the\u00a0<a class=\"af mx\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/engineering\/nonlinear-feedback\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">nonlinear feedback loops<\/a>\u00a0that exist and\u00a0<a class=\"af mx\" href=\"https:\/\/evolutionofcomputing.org\/Multicellular\/Emergence.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">emergent phenomena<\/a>\u00a0that arise from them, can neither be predicted nor controlled. Of this, I am fairly certain.<\/p>\n<p id=\"a151\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph ls lt fo lu b lv lw lx ly lz ma mb mc md me mf mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp fh bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Do I believe \u2018collapse\u2019 of our current globalised, industrial world will occur? Yes. The evidence, to me, seems overwhelming; particularly all the experiments involving complex societies that have been carried out before us and ended with decline\/collapse (see\u00a0<a class=\"af mx\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joseph_Tainter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">Tainter\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"af mx\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Collapse-Complex-Societies-Studies-Archaeology\/dp\/052138673X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">The Collapse of Complex Societies<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"af mx\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jared_Diamond\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">Diamond\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"af mx\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Collapse-Societies-Choose-Succeed-Revised\/dp\/0143117009\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">Collapse<\/a>) and the \u2018fact\u2019 that we live on a world with finite resources but are pursuing perpetual growth (see\u00a0<a class=\"af mx\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Donella_Meadows\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">Meadows<\/a>\u00a0et al\u2019s\u00a0<a class=\"af mx\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Limits-Growth-Donella-H-Meadows\/dp\/193149858X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">The Limits to Growth<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"af mx\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Overshoot-Ecological-Basis-Revolutionary-Change\/dp\/0252009886\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">Catton\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"af mx\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Overshoot-Ecological-Basis-Revolutionary-Change\/dp\/0252009886\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">Overshoot<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p id=\"11b0\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph ls lt fo lu b lv lw lx ly lz ma mb mc md me mf mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp fh bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Will, as some argue, our technology and human ingenuity save us in this current trial in complex societies?
