The Bahrain-based command said the USS Bataan and USS Carter Hall warships provide &#8220;greater flexibility and maritime capability&#8221; in ensuring the safety of global shipping in the Gulf and Mideast area of operations.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caption caption-img inline-images image-style-inline-images\" role=\"group\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/redseadep.jpg?itok=jt-OUan4\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"df593879-8b3b-4f92-a3db-52ca3639dd21\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><figcaption><em>US Navy, file image<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The statement further said the new troops and warships will seek to &#8220;deter destabilizing activity and de-escalate regional tensions caused by Iran\u2019s harassment and seizures of merchant vessels.&#8221;\u00a0Both US warships are\u00a0amphibious assault-style vessels with rapid deployment capabilities of both Marines and helicopters, and other assets.<\/p>\n<p>It comes after the Pentagon has\u00a0<strong>tallied that over 20 internationally-flagged tankers have been either seized or harassed by Iran&#8217;s military<\/strong>\u00a0over the last two years, particularly in the vital Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n<p>Last week the Pentagon announced an unconventional and controversial plan to &#8220;<strong>deploy a security guard composed of Marines on board commercial tankers<\/strong>\u00a0passing through and near the Strait of Hormuz, to form an additional layer of defense for these ships,&#8221; according to Fifth Fleet spokesman Tim Hawkins.<\/p>\n<p>But there are legal questions and hurdles to such a proposal, still reportedly being mulled &#8211; given the US Marines would be dealing with various foreign vessels, and presumably some would not give permission for them to board.
