Most commentators tried to put a positive spin on this but I have to disagree. Canada\u2019s labour market is struggling and the outlook for the near future isn\u2019t looking any better.<\/p>\n<p>The chart below is what the Bank of Canada tracks as a measure of the broader health of the labour market. As you can see aggregate hours (the sum of all hours worked by full time and part time employees) have been flat over the past year.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"cboxElement\" title=\"Eh is not OK\" href=\"http:\/\/www.otterwoodcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/mar16.png\" rel=\"lightbox[5778]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5779 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.otterwoodcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/mar16.png\" alt=\"mar16\" width=\"638\" height=\"396\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What limited strength exists in the labour market comes from two unsustainable sources: construction and the public sector.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"cboxElement\" title=\"Eh is not OK\" href=\"http:\/\/www.otterwoodcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/mar162.png\" rel=\"lightbox[5778]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5780 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.otterwoodcapital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/mar162.png\" alt=\"mar162\" width=\"633\" height=\"391\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s worrisome is the impact of oil prices in Alberta. As per Macquarie, half of the gains in construction employment across Canada occurred in Alberta, a province where construction activity is likely to retreat. As you can see in 1986 in the months following the decline in oil, Alberta\u2019s construction industry employment fell by 17%.
