{"id":65474,"date":"2023-07-09T07:16:36","date_gmt":"2023-07-09T12:16:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=65474"},"modified":"2023-07-09T07:16:36","modified_gmt":"2023-07-09T12:16:36","slug":"nuclear-fusion-eternal-energy-eternal-damnation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=65474","title":{"rendered":"Nuclear Fusion: Eternal Energy = Eternal Damnation"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/londongreenleft.blogspot.com\/2023\/06\/nuclear-fusion-eternal-energy-eternal.html\">Nuclear Fusion: Eternal Energy = Eternal Damnation<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Like a third rate zombie movie on Netflix, delusions of nuclear fusion repeatedly rise from the dead.\u00a0 The cover story in the June 2023 issue of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/what-is-the-future-of-fusion-energy\/\"><em>Scientific American<\/em><\/a>\u00a0by Philip Ball, \u201cStar Power: Does Fusion Have a Future After All?\u201d recycles the corporate line which was broadcast on December 13, 2022.\u00a0 The\u00a0US Department of Energy\u00a0(DOE)\u00a0announced\u00a0that the\u00a0National Ignition Facility\u00a0(NIF) at the\u00a0Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory\u00a0had reached a \u201cbreakthrough\u201d in developing an alternative to fission.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Joshua Frank described the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.counterpunch.org\/2023\/01\/27\/nuclear-fusion-wont-save-the-climate-but-it-might-blow-up-the-world\/\">hype<\/a>\u00a0over nuclear fusion \u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c\u2026 there\u2019s no toxic mining involved, nor do thousands of gallons of cold water have to be pumped in to cool overheated reactors, nor will there be radioactive waste byproducts lasting hundreds of thousands of years. And not a risk of a nuclear meltdown in sight! Fusion, so the cheery news went, is safe, effective, and efficient!\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After six months of the announcement\u2019s being debunked, the\u00a0<em>Scientific American\u00a0<\/em>article admitted some of the inherent faults with fusion, repeated some of the original misstatements, and went on with detailed descriptions of technical tweaks necessary to make the technology viable in the second half of the century.
