(Kyodo\/Reuters)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In a report\u00a0published on July 4 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iaea.org\/sites\/default\/files\/iaea_comprehensive_alps_report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pdf<\/a>), the IAEA,\u00a0a United Nations body, said that the findings followed a comprehensive assessment and safety review of the\u00a0treated water stored at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station (FDNPS).<\/p>\n<p>Additionally,<strong>\u00a0the IAEA said that \u201ccontrolled, gradual discharges of the treated water to the sea\u201d as currently planned by\u00a0Japan\u2019s government and\u00a0the plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings (TEPCO), would have a \u201cnegligible radiological impact on people and the environment.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The report is the result of a nearly two-year assessment conducted by\u00a0an IAEA task force made up of top specialists from within the agency advised by \u201cinternationally recognized nuclear safety experts from eleven countries,\u201d according to a press release.<\/p>\n<p>Around\u00a01.2 million cubic meters in volume of water used to cool the fuel rods of the Fukushima plant will be released under the plan\u00a0over the next three to four decades in order to prevent accidental leaks and to allow for the plant\u2019s decommissioning.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the plan, the\u00a0IAEA said it will conduct an independent and objective safety review during the discharge phase, with a continued on-site presence and live online monitoring throughout.<\/p>\n<p>Japan has not specified a date for the water release.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The\u00a02011 Fukushima nuclear disaster was triggered by a\u00a0deadly 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami in the northern region of Japan which knocked out the\u00a0plant\u2019s cooling systems, triggering the meltdown of three reactors.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2026click on the above link to read the rest\u2026<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Plan To Pour Radioactive Waste From Fukushima Nuclear Plant Into Pacific Ocean Is Safe: IAEA The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has concluded that\u00a0Japan\u2019s plans to release radioactive water from the damaged Fukushima nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean are consistent with international safety standards.
