US Honeybees Suffer Second Deadliest Season On Record<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/header>\n

Figures published today reveal\u00a0beekeepers in the U.S. lost an estimated 48% of their honey bee colonies in 2022-23<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

As Statista’s Martin Armstrong reports<\/a>, according to an annual survey that tracks the state of managed hives, this is the\u00a0second highest death rate on record<\/strong>\u00a0after 2020-21’s 51%.<\/p>\n

Honey bees are crucial to our food supply, pollinating over 100 different crop types.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As reported by Bee Informed, a national collaboration of leading research labs and universities in agricultural science,\u00a0the most prominent cause of colony death reported by commercial beekeepers over the year was \u201cvarroa destructor\u201d – a parasitic mite that attacks and feeds on honey bees.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the summer,\u00a0‘Queen issues’\u00a0<\/strong>were the second most common reason cited, followed by\u00a0‘adverse weather’<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

According to the publication, “although the total number of honey bee colonies in the country has remained relatively stable over the last 20 years (~2.6 million colonies according to the USDA NASS Honey Reports), loss rates remain high”.<\/p>\n
