Freedom of speech means a lot to us at the OP.\u00a0 However, that\u2019s been fading fast, as\u00a0Daisy has documented<\/a>,\u00a0and as though speech restrictions aren\u2019t bad enough, most of us have been lab rats for central planners\u2019 behavioral experiments longer than we probably care to realize.\u00a0 And now there are Nudge Units.<\/p>\n

Huge amounts of money have been poured into \u201cnudge research,\u201d determining the best ways to get populations to change their behaviors without passing laws or using force.<\/p>\n

What are Nudge Units?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s look at how these \u201cNudge Units\u201d got started, what they\u2019ve been used for most recently, and what they\u2019re likely to focus on next.<\/p>\n

The concept of \u201cnudging\u201d people into making better choices became popular with the book\u00a0Nudge\u2014Improving Decisions About Health, Wealth, and Happiness<\/i><\/a>, authored by Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein, and published in 2008.\u00a0Their\u00a0book<\/a>\u00a0defines a nudge as:<\/p>\n

. . .any aspect of the choice architecture that alters people\u2019s behavior in a predictable way without forbidding any options or significantly changing their economic incentives.\u00a0 To count as a mere nudge, the intervention must be easy and cheap to avoid.\u00a0 Nudges are not mandates.\u00a0 Putting fruit at eye level counts as a nudge.\u00a0 Banning junk food does not.\u00a0 (p.6)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

(You may be interested to note that author Sunstein is married to Samantha Power, the administrator of Biden\u2019s US Agency for International Development and previously Obama\u2019s ambassador to the UN. Individuals in government and industry quickly realized that the authors\u2019 insights into the decision-making process could be used to manipulate that process in the minds of the general public, many of whom don\u2019t have the time or mental energy for NYT bestsellers.<\/p>\n
