Murphy et. al\u2019s research concludes that many EROI analyses incorrectly compare fossil fuels with renewables by measuring them at the wrong areas. By consistently measuring them both at their \u2018point of use\u2019, they are able to develop a far more consistent approach.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Similarly, Ugo Bardi wrote a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thesunflowerparadigm.blogspot.com\/2023\/01\/setting-record-straight-on-eroi-from.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post in January<\/a>\u00a0whose title was \u201d\u00a0Setting the record straight on the EROI from renewables. It is much better than that of fossil fuels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both Ahmed and Bardi used a 2022 paper,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.artberman.com\/wp-admin\/Review%20and%20Harmonization%20in%202022.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Energy Return on Investment of Major Energy Carriers: Review and Harmonization<\/a>\u00a0as their source.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Net Energy and EROI Essentials<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Net energy is the\u00a0<em>difference<\/em>\u00a0between the total energy output minus the total energy input over the life cycle of an energy source or technology (Figure 1).<\/p>\n<p>EROI is the\u00a0<em>ratio<\/em>\u00a0of the total energy output divided by the total energy input over the life cycle of an energy source.<\/p>\n<p>That means that the net energy for a 10 megajoule (MJ) energy input and a 20 MJ output is 10 MJ and the EROI is 2 (Figure 1).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30555\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30555\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30555 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.artberman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/NE-EROI.jpg?resize=570%2C291&amp;ssl=1\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 570px) 100vw, 570px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.artberman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/NE-EROI.jpg?w=570&amp;ssl=1 570w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.artberman.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/NE-EROI.jpg?resize=300%2C153&amp;ssl=1 300w\" alt=\"\" width=\"570\" height=\"291\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30555\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure 1.
