Catton (1980)<\/h3>\n<p class=\"page_subtitle\"><strong>Though,\u00a0<a id=\"lnk01\" class=\"os\" title=\"goto Wikipedia: \u2018Overshoot (population)\u2019 (opens in a new window)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Overshoot_%28population%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em class=\"quote\">\u2018Overshoot\u2019<\/em><\/a>, is ostensibly a book about\u00a0<a id=\"lnk02\" class=\"os\" title=\"goto Wikipedia: \u2018Ecological economics\u2019 (opens in a new window)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ecological_economics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">biophysical limits<\/a>, the theme that runs through it is about the human propensity for\u00a0<a id=\"lnk03\" title=\"goto A Book in Five Minutes, No.1: \u2018The Limits to Growth\u2019, September 2021\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fraw.org.uk\/blog\/reviews\/001\/index.shtml\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"noopener\">denying obvious facts<\/a>:\u00a0<em class=\"main\">Our ability to deceive not only others, but more importantly, ourselves.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/header>\n<section id=\"issue\">\n<p id=\"p01\" class=\"intro\">As with the first review in this four-part miniseries,\u00a0<a id=\"lnk04\" title=\"goto A Book in Five Minutes, No.26: \u2018Farewell to Growth\u2019 (2007), Full Pink Moon 2023\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fraw.org.uk\/blog\/reviews\/026\/index.shtml\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"noopener\"><em class=\"quote\">\u2018Farewell to Growth\u2019<\/em>\u00a0(2007)<\/a>, any book that posits the \u2018end of affluence\u2019 will inevitably attract the\u00a0<a id=\"lnk05\" class=\"os\" title=\"goto Wikipedia: \u2018Misanthropy\u2019 (opens in a new window)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Misanthropy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">misanthrope<\/a>, and their arch-enemy, the\u00a0<a id=\"lnk06\" class=\"os\" title=\"goto Wikipedia: \u2018Cornucopianism\u2019 (opens in a new window)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cornucopianism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cornucopian<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"p02\">There\u2019s a lovely exchange from one of the more\u00a0<a id=\"lnk07\" class=\"os\" title=\"goto Wikipedia: \u2018Jose Chung's From Outer Space\u2019 (opens in a new window)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jose_Chung%27s_From_Outer_Space\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">comical\u00a0<em class=\"quote\">\u2018X-Files\u2019<\/em>\u00a0episodes<\/a>\u00a0that\u2019s very descriptive:<\/p>\n<p id=\"p02a\" class=\"quote\">\u201cI wanna be abducted by aliens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"p02b\" class=\"quote\"><em class=\"quote\">\u201cWhy, whatever for?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"p02c\" class=\"quote\">\u201c&#8230;I just wanna be taken away into some place where I don\u2019t have to worry about finding a job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"p03\">Those who celebrate the book are as equally interesting as those who hate it: Celebrating the \u2018end of society\u2019 can be just as escapist as the cult-like belief that\u00a0<em class=\"quote\">\u2018technology will save us\u2019<\/em>; yet, as Catton describes, both misanthropy and Cornucopianism are a means of denying the\u00a0<a id=\"lnk08\" title=\"goto A Book in Five Minutes, No.20: \u2018A Blueprint for Survival\u2019 (1972), November 2022\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fraw.org.uk\/blog\/reviews\/020\/index.shtml\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"noopener\">demonstrable trends<\/a>\u00a0unfolding before our eyes.<\/p>\n<p id=\"p04\">Catton summarises the scope of the book in the Preface:<\/p>\n<p id=\"p05\" class=\"quote\">\u201cIn a future that is as unavoidable as it will be unwelcome, survival and sanity may depend upon our ability to cherish rather than to disparage the concept of human dignity&#8230; I have tried to show the real nature of humanity&#8217;s predicament not because understanding its nature will enable us to escape it, but because if we do not understand it we shall continue to act and react in ways that make it worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"p06\">That\u2019s why this book has as many \u2018haters\u2019 as it does devotees: It attacks people\u2019s\u00a0<a id=\"lnk09\" class=\"os\" title=\"goto Wikipedia: \u2018Cargo cult\u2019 (opens in a new window)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cargo_cult\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018cult-like\u2019<\/a>\u00a0belief in the\u00a0<a id=\"lnk10\" class=\"os\" title=\"goto Wikipedia: \u2018Innovation economics\u2019 (opens in a new window)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Innovation_economics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">innovative power<\/a>\u00a0of technology;
