\u201cI keep hearing about battery innovation, but it never makes it to my phone.<\/em>\u201d \u2013 Evan Spiegel<\/p>\n

For those that have been in and around alternative energy research for the better part of long careers, nothing makes the eyes roll harder than loud proclamations of breakthrough advances in battery technology. Consider this fun exercise: open up Google, search \u201cbattery breakthrough,\u201d click \u201cNews,\u201d and customize the results for\u00a0any<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0random six-month window in the past\u00a020 years<\/strong><\/em>. Select an article that catches your eye and you\u2019ll find exciting claims like this\u00a0one<\/a>\u00a0from 2005 (emphasis added throughout):<\/p>\n

\u201cA rechargeable battery that can be\u00a0fully charged in just 6 minutes, lasts 10 times as long<\/strong>\u00a0as today\u2019s rechargeables and can provide bursts of electricity up\u00a0to three times more powerful<\/strong>\u00a0is showing promise in a\u00a0Nevada lab<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n

New types of battery are badly needed<\/strong>. Nokia\u2019s chief technologist Yrj\u00f6 Neuvo warned last year that batteries are failing to keep up with the demands of the increasingly energy-draining features being crammed into mobile devices.<\/em>\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And\u00a0another<\/a>\u00a0from 2011, with the humorously ironic title \u201cNo joke: This is the biggest battery breakthrough ever<\/em>\u201d:<\/p>\n

\u201cA pioneer in battery research who already successfully launched a $350 million company to supply batteries to the likes of GE and Chrysler has done it again \u2014 only this time, \u2018it\u2019 represents\u00a0the complete reinvention of battery technology as we know it<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n

This technology is in the\u00a0research phase<\/strong>, but if it can be cost-effectively brought to market \u2014 and there’s every reason to believe that it could be \u2014 it\u00a0could revolutionize<\/strong>\u00a0the way we store and transport energy, in the process\u00a0fully replacing fossil fuels and especially oil<\/strong>.<\/em>\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
