{"id":65070,"date":"2023-02-20T06:55:46","date_gmt":"2023-02-20T11:55:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=65070"},"modified":"2023-02-20T06:55:46","modified_gmt":"2023-02-20T11:55:46","slug":"the-world-wants-to-be-deceived","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=65070","title":{"rendered":"The World Wants to Be Deceived"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"before-post\">\n<h3 class=\"post-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/off-guardian.org\/2023\/02\/19\/the-world-wants-to-be-deceived\/\"><span class=\"the-title\">The World Wants to Be Deceived<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"post_page-content post\">\n<p class=\"dropcap\">My title comes from a 19<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century author whose name does not matter nor would it mean much if I mentioned him.\u00a0 It\u2019s an old truth that has not changed a bit over the centuries.<\/p>\n<p>I think, however, it would be more linguistically accurate to say that most people want to be deceived, for the world, the earth doesn\u2019t give a damn, as the French poet Jacques Pr\u00e9vert reminds us in \u201c<em>Song in the Blood<\/em>\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>There are great puddles of blood on the world<br \/>\nwhere\u2019s it all going all this spilled blood<br \/>\nis it the earth that drinks it and gets drunk<br \/>\nfunny kind of drunkography then<br \/>\nso wise\u2026so monotonous\u2026<br \/>\nNo the earth doesn\u2019t get drunk<br \/>\nthe earth doesn\u2019t turn askew<br \/>\nit pushes its little car regularly its four seasons<br \/>\nrain\u2026snow<br \/>\nhail\u2026fair weather<br \/>\nnever is it drunk<br \/>\n[\u2026]<br \/>\nIt doesn\u2019t give a damn<br \/>\nThe earth<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But people, the thinking reeds as Pascal called us, we, who through the support of wars and violence of all sorts, care just enough to want to be deceived as to what we are doing by making so much blood that is inside people get to the outside for the earth to drink.<\/p>\n<p>I could, of course, quote liberally from truth-tellers down through history who have said the same thing about self-deception with all its shades and nuances.
