I\u2019m talking, of course, about this country, or rather the world Big Oil spent big bucks creating.You know, the one in which the obvious &#8212; climate change &#8212; is doubted and denied, and in which the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/blue-marble\/2015\/01\/republican-climate-denial-caucus\" target=\"_blank\">new Republican Congress<\/a>\u00a0is actively opposed to doing anything about it. Just the other day, for instance, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell wrote a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kentucky.com\/2015\/03\/03\/3725288_states-should-reject-obama-mandate.html?rh=1\" target=\"_blank\">column<\/a>\u00a0in his home state paper, the\u00a0<em>Lexington Herald-Leader<\/em>, adopting the old Nancy Reagan\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Just_Say_No\" target=\"_blank\">slogan<\/a>\u00a0\u201cjust say no\u201d to climate change. The senator from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2014\/11\/mitch-mcconnell-coal-112908.html\" target=\"_blank\">Coalville<\/a>, smarting over the Obama administration\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/blue-marble\/2015\/03\/mitch-mcconnell-climate-rules-obama\" target=\"_blank\">attempts<\/a>\u00a0to reduce carbon emissions from coal-fired power plants, is<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/03\/09\/opinion\/a-reckless-call-from-the-senates-leader.html\" target=\"_blank\">urging<\/a>\u00a0state governors to simply ignore the Environmental Protection Agency\u2019s proposed \u201clandmark limits\u201d on those plants &#8212; to hell with the law and to hell, above all, with climate change. But it\u2019s probably no news to you that the inmates are now running the asylum.<\/p>\n<p>Just weeks ago, an example of Big Energy&#8217;s largess when it comes to sowing doubt about climate change surfaced.\u00a0 A rare scientific researcher, Wei-Hock Soon, who has published work denying the reality of climate change &#8212; the warming of the planet, he claims, is a result of \u201cvariations in the sun\u2019s energy\u201d &#8212; turned out to have received\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/02\/22\/us\/ties-to-corporate-cash-for-climate-change-researcher-Wei-Hock-Soon.html\" target=\"_blank\">$1.2 million<\/a>\u00a0from various fossil fuel outfits, according to recently released documents; nor did he bother to disclose such support to any of the publications using his work.\u00a0 \u201cThe documents,\u201d reported the\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>, \u201cshow that Dr. Soon, in correspondence with his corporate funders, described many of his scientific papers as \u2018deliverables\u2019 that he completed in exchange for their money.
