Bogged down by inefficiency, ineptitude, and severe levels of corruption, the country\u2019s power utility Eskom has proven incapable of providing sufficient and reliable energy to the nation&#8217;s grid, despite the domestic abundance of coal. Once one of the most reliable utilities in Africa, Eksom now exists in a state of constant emergency which is currently threatening to push the country into civil disarray and economic catastrophe.<\/p>\n<p>Eksom desperately needs to service its poorly maintained power plants. On any given day, Eksom operates at about 50% capacity. Rolling blackouts, known locally as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/showme.co.za\/pretoria\/lifestyle\/loadshedding-stages-explained-in-detail\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018load shedding\u2019<\/a>\u00a0have become a normal and expected part in day-to-day life in South Africa. \u201cIt even has predictable stages,\u201d Forbes reported in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/dianafurchtgott-roth\/2023\/01\/11\/corrupt-power-sector-strangles-south-africa\/?sh=514b44cc5f30\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent excoriation<\/a>\u00a0of Eksom operations, \u201cranging from Stage 1 (reducing power for two hours at a time over a four-day period) through Stage 8 (reducing power for 12 hours out of every 24).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the last 12 months, however, these blackouts have gone into overdrive, with the power going out several times a day and up to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/01\/18\/energy\/ramaphosa-davos-south-africa-blackouts\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">12 hours at a time<\/a>. Adding insult to injury, Eksom has added a steep energy tariff to help bolster their own failing finances.
