When the system they depended on ceased to function properly, they no longer had the ability to earn a living wage and care for their families. Even at a time when you could get a meal for a nickel, many people struggled to feed themselves.<\/p>\n<p style=\"background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; vertical-align: baseline; line-height: 21px; font-size: 14px; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; padding: 0px; margin: 1em 0px 1em 0px; border: 0px initial initial;\">In many rural areas, farmers faced the difficulty of being able to even grow enough to feed themselves. The fact that many of the people were watermen, that made their living on the Chesapeake Bay catching various types of seafood throughout the year, made the depression different for them.
