(Drew Angerer\/Getty Images)<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"c-blog-post__body\">\n<div class=\"c-blog-post__content s-wysiwyg s-wysiwyg--blog\">\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Until it decided to confront Moscow with an existential military threat in Ukraine,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.org\/publications\/tir\/article.asp?id=1742\">Washington confined the use of American military power<\/a>\u00a0to conflicts that Americans could afford to lose, wars with weak opponents in the developing world from Saigon to Baghdad that did not present an existential threat to U.S. forces or American territory. This time\u2014a proxy war with Russia\u2014is different.<\/p>\n<p>Contrary to early Beltway hopes and expectations, Russia neither collapsed internally nor capitulated to the collective West\u2019s demands for regime change in Moscow.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=E_FQebdF83o\">Washington underestimated<\/a>\u00a0Russia\u2019s societal cohesion, its latent military potential, and its relative immunity to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/carnegieendowment.org\/2023\/01\/25\/carnegie-connects-how-russia-handles-western-sanctions-with-polina-ivanova-event-8021\">Western economic sanctions.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As a result, Washington\u2019s proxy war against Russia is failing. U.S. Defense Secretary\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politics.com\/c\/factcheck\/the-nato-alliance-is-holding-strong-on-ukraine-but-fractures-are-emerging\">Lloyd Austin was unusually candid<\/a>\u00a0about the situation in Ukraine when he told the allies in Germany at Ramstein Air Base on January 20, \u201cWe have a window of opportunity here, between now and the spring,\u201d admitting, \u201cThat\u2019s not a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Glenn_Diesen\/status\/1616873849928171521\">Alexei Arestovich<\/a>, President Zelensky\u2019s recently fired advisor and unofficial \u201cSpinmeister,\u201d was more direct. He expressed his own doubts that Ukraine can win its war with Russia and he now questions whether Ukraine will even survive the war.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/news-feed\/spiegel-german-intelligence-alarmed-by-high-losses-of-ukrainian-army-in-bakhmut\">Ukrainian losses<\/a>\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-61742736\">at least 150,000 dead<\/a>\u00a0including 35,000 missing in action and presumed dead\u2014have fatally weakened Ukrainian forces resulting in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/jun\/10\/ukraine-casualty-rate-russia-war-tipping-point\">a fragile Ukrainian defensive posture<\/a>\u00a0that will likely shatter under the crushing weight of attacking Russian forces in the next few weeks.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026click on the above link to read the rest\u2026<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This Time It\u2019s Different Neither we nor our allies are prepared to fight all-out war with Russia, regionally or globally.
