The cause of the price spike is a surge in heating demand and delays in restarting nuclear plants.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2023-01-17_03-46-36.png?itok=MDeSMRJM\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2023-01-17_03-46-36.png?itok=MDeSMRJM\" data-link-option=\"0\"><picture><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/2023-01-17_03-46-36.png?itok=MDeSMRJM\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"229\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"f5486e9a-e159-48f6-8fbb-93c6badf9ada\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/picture><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Day-ahead prices in Germany, Europe&#8217;s largest economy, increased as much as 16% Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2023-01-17_03-45-20.png?itok=eWP3_AWU\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2023-01-17_03-45-20.png?itok=eWP3_AWU\" data-link-option=\"0\"><picture><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/2023-01-17_03-45-20.png?itok=eWP3_AWU\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"231\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"c1d47d2f-87ec-4991-bd74-641f0b6f2c4a\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/picture><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Cold is expected to grip areas from the mid-continent to west, including in western Germany, France and the UK where average departures from normal range anywhere between 2-6 degrees Celsius below normal,&#8221; Matthew Dross, a meteorologist at Maxar Technologies, told Bloomberg.<\/p>\n<p>Dross said the cold spell &#8220;will\u00a0increase heating demand for those regions to above normal levels.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Despite colder weather and increasing heating demand, Dutch front-month natural gas futures, Europe&#8217;s benchmark, slid as much as 7.3% after rising 4.6%. Prices have clawed back some losses after tagging 16-month lows.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2023-01-17_04-05-53.png?itok=1r7vkLWY\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2023-01-17_04-05-53.png?itok=1r7vkLWY\" data-link-option=\"0\"><picture><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/2023-01-17_04-05-53.png?itok=1r7vkLWY\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"226\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"bf7b43ee-cfae-41fc-9f33-2b057bb73b1d\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/picture><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mild temperatures are expected to return next week, denting demand once more. Morgan Stanley recently wrote that Europe&#8217;s NatGas consumption in the year to October could be as low as 16% below the five-year average.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Even if it makes gas-fired power plants increasingly competitive with coal-fired power plants, it does not lead to an increase in gas demand for power generation because&#8221; other cheaper power generation sources will be used first, Engie SA&#8217;s EnergyScan wrote in a note.<\/p>\n<p>*\u00a0 \u00a0*\u00a0 \u00a0*<\/p>\n<p>Record warmth spread across Europe in the first half of January. Temperatures in the energy-stricken continent felt more like spring as several metropolitan areas recorded the warmest temperatures on record.
