(Image credit: Bob Henson)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"main-content\">\n<article id=\"post-96241\" class=\"post-96241 post type-post status-publish format-standard has-post-thumbnail hentry category-eye-on-the-storm category-feature-articles category-weather tag-jeff-masters entry\">\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">October 2022 was Earth\u2019s fourth-warmest October since record-keeping began in 1880, NOAA\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncdc.noaa.gov\/sotc\/global\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">National Centers for Environmental Information<\/a>\u00a0(NCEI) reported November 15.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/data.giss.nasa.gov\/gistemp\/tabledata_v4\/GLB.Ts+dSST.txt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">NASA<\/a>\u00a0rated October as the fifth-warmest on record, behind 2016, 1.23 degrees Celsius (2.21\u00b0F) above the 1880-1920 period \u2013 its best estimate for when preindustrial temperatures last occurred. The European\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/climate.copernicus.eu\/surface-air-temperature-october-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Copernicus Climate Change Service<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ds.data.jma.go.jp\/tcc\/tcc\/products\/gwp\/temp\/ann_wld.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Japan Meteorological Agency<\/a>\u00a0rated October 2022 as the third-warmest October on record. Such minor differences in the agencies\u2019 rankings can result from the different ways they treat data-sparse regions such as the Arctic.<\/p>\n<p>Land areas had their second-warmest October on record in 2022, land areas in the Northern Hemisphere had their warmest October on record, and global ocean temperatures were the fifth-warmest on record, according to NOAA. Europe had its warmest October on record; Africa, its third-warmest; and Asia and North America, their sixth-warmest.
