In\u00a0a year, he can generate about 140 kilowatt-hours.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How does that compare to the energy embodied in a barrel of oil?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A standard 42-gallon (159-litre) barrel of oil can perform 1,700 kilowatt-hours of work. Modern oil-driven power stations are about 37 percent\u00a0efficient, since they produce lots of waste heat. So one barrel of oil has the same work potential as the physical labour of 4.8 human men over a year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oil is a super-concentrated form of energy!<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fluid-container hw-article-font\">\n<div class=\"justify-content-center\">\n<div class=\"py-4 text-center\">\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howandwhy.com\/resources\/images\/world\/_listing\/Oil_vs_people.jpg\" alt=\"oil versus people\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-container hw-article-font mx-auto\">\n<div class=\"py-4\">\n<h3>Fossil fuel serfs<\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"hw-drop-cap\">I<\/span>n 2019, before lockdowns began, the world consumed about 35 billion barrels of oil, corresponding to the services of 165 billion labourers. \u00a0Oil makes up two-fifths of all the fossil fuel energy the world consumes, the rest being mostly coal and natural gas. Our total fossil fuel use in 2019 amounted to the work of 380 billion men.<\/p>\n<p>Those fossil fuel-equivalent workers are always on tap, don\u2019t take holidays, don\u2019t need to sleep and don\u2019t go on strike. They have no rights.\u00a0<strong>Let\u2019s call them our fossil fuel serfs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can think of a fossil fuel serf as the work capacity of a full-time human labourer for a year, measured in terms of oil, coal or natural gas.<\/p>\n<p>A Ford Focus, for example, has a 52-litre (11.5 gallons) fuel tank. One barrel of oil would provide the petrol for three fill-ups.
