{"id":6416,"date":"2015-03-11T06:00:54","date_gmt":"2015-03-11T11:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=6416"},"modified":"2015-03-11T06:00:54","modified_gmt":"2015-03-11T11:00:54","slug":"fukushima-disaster-radiation-levels-posing-cancer-risks-on-fourth-anniversary-of-earthquake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=6416","title":{"rendered":"Fukushima disaster: Radiation levels posing cancer risks on fourth anniversary of earthquake"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2015-03-11\/fukushima-radiation-levels-high-four-years-after-disaster\/6297718\" target=\"_blank\">Fukushima disaster: Radiation levels posing cancer risks on fourth anniversary of earthquake<\/a><\/h3>\n<p class=\"first\">Four years ago today Japan was hit with a magnitude 9.0 earthquake and massive tsunami that caused widespread destruction, leaving almost 22,000 people dead or missing and triggering a crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.<\/p>\n<p>The triple nuclear meltdown was the world&#8217;s worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl.<\/p>\n<p>About 120,000 people still cannot return their homes because of high radiation levels, but the issue of long-term health implications like cancer are causing the greatest concern and controversy in Japan.<\/p>\n<p>Before the disaster, there was just one to two cases of thyroid cancers in a million Japanese children but now Fukushima has more than 100 confirmed or suspected cases, having tested about 300,000 children.<\/p>\n<p>Megumi Muto&#8217;s daughter Nana has undergone scans to determine if the lumps in her thyroid glands have grown.
