wildlife populations have plunged by an average of 69% in just under 50 years, according to a leading scientific assessment, as humans continue to clear forests, consume beyond the limits of the planet and pollute on an industrial scale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1vtk2mf\">From the open ocean to tropical rainforests, the abundance of birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles is in freefall, declining on average by more than two-thirds between 1970 and 2018, according to the WWF and Zoological Society of London\u2019s (ZSL) biennial\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/livingplanet.panda.org\/en-gb\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Living Planet Report<\/a>. Two years ago, the figure\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2020\/sep\/10\/humans-exploiting-and-destroying-nature-on-unprecedented-scale-report-aoe\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">stood at 68%<\/a>, four years ago,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2018\/oct\/30\/humanity-wiped-out-animals-since-1970-major-report-finds\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">it was at 60<\/a>%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1vtk2mf\">Many scientists believe we\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2017\/jul\/10\/earths-sixth-mass-extinction-event-already-underway-scientists-warn\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">are living through the sixth mass extinction<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 the largest loss of life on Earth since the time of the dinosaurs \u2013 and that it is being driven by humans.
