I\u2019m trying to distract you with cute Corgi pictures.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"1496\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph kk kl ig km b kn ko jh kp kq kr jk ks kt ku kv kw kx ky kz la lb lc ld le lf hz gh\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"km ih\">A Word on Self-Sufficiency<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"cfa7\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph kk kl ig km b kn ko jh kp kq kr jk ks kt ku kv kw kx ky kz la lb lc ld le lf hz gh\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Let\u2019s talk about the big question of the year: \u201c<em class=\"lg\">How much do I grow to feed my family for the year?\u201d<\/em>\u00a0It gets asked, and then for some reason that question leads to the talk and belief in self-sufficiency, and then \u201cself-sufficiency\u201d becomes a buzz word and gets batted around all over the place, so let me clear the air on that.<\/p>\n<p id=\"07cf\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph kk kl ig km b kn ko jh kp kq kr jk ks kt ku kv kw kx ky kz la lb lc ld le lf hz gh\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Here\u2019s the thing \u2014 and sorry \u2014 we normal, everyday people with everyday yards CAN\u2019T grow enough to not need food from another source, and you can\u2019t grow everything you need, either. I\u2019m not even sure that people with large acreages can do it. I doubt it. It would take a huge investment and a ginormous skill set.<\/p>\n<p id=\"515a\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph kk kl ig km b kn ko jh kp kq kr jk ks kt ku kv kw kx ky kz la lb lc ld le lf hz gh\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">For us mere mortals, either we don\u2019t have the land for it, we don\u2019t have the skills for it, we\u2019re not in the right area to grow something, or we don\u2019t have the money for it (or all of the above). And some of these things apply to people with large acreages as well.<\/p>\n<p id=\"d87e\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph kk kl ig km b kn ko jh kp kq kr jk ks kt ku kv kw kx ky kz la lb lc ld le lf hz gh\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Let\u2019s just think about it for a minute. Can you grow:<\/p>\n<p id=\"6295\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph kk kl ig km b kn ko jh kp kq kr jk ks kt ku kv kw kx ky kz la lb lc ld le lf hz gh\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Sugar? Cocoa? Coffee? Tea? Enough of\u00a0<strong class=\"km ih\">anything<\/strong>\u00a0to press it for cooking oil? Or enough animals to provide you with lard or butter to use in lieu of cooking oils? Can you grow enough wheat or barley or oats (or all three) to feed your family on TOP of all the other things?
