{"id":63766,"date":"2022-10-10T19:00:31","date_gmt":"2022-10-11T00:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=63766"},"modified":"2022-10-10T19:00:31","modified_gmt":"2022-10-11T00:00:31","slug":"anthony-blinken-raises-the-pucker-factor-on-dissent-taibbi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=63766","title":{"rendered":"Anthony Blinken Raises The Pucker Factor On Dissent: Taibbi"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"ArticleFull_header__Eyn7V\">\n<h3 class=\"ArticleFull_title__MEgbb\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/political\/anthony-blinken-raises-pucker-factor-dissent-taibbi\">Anthony Blinken Raises The Pucker Factor On Dissent: Taibbi<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"NodeContent_mainContent__t4rGu\">\n<div class=\"NodeContent_body__6iJOI NodeBody_container__hI8PI\">\n<p>After publishing \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/taibbi.substack.com\/publish\/post\/77380408\" rel=\"\">On John Lennon&#8217;s Birthday, a Few Words About War<\/a>\u201d last night,\u00a0<strong>old friend and former\u00a0<\/strong><strong><em>Moscow Times\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><strong>editor Matt Bivens* and I discovered we\u2019d written on the same topic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>You can find Matt\u2019s excellent essay\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mattbivens.substack.com\/p\/violent-crime-is-fun\" rel=\"\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He notes a big thing I missed.\u00a0<strong>A series of ominous statements was buried in Secretary of State Anthony Blinken\u2019s recent joint\u00a0<\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/secretary-antony-j-blinken-and-canadian-foreign-minister-melanie-joly-at-a-joint-press-availability\/#:~:text=It%E2%80%99s%20a%20tremendous,years%20to%20come\" rel=\"\">press conference<\/a><\/strong><strong>\u00a0with Canadian Foreign Minister M\u00e9lanie Joly,<\/strong>\u00a0trumpeting the \u201ctremendous opportunity\u201d the Nord Stream blasts afforded to remove \u201cthe dependence on Russian energy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/x3pY6eXwMOs\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A few public figures questioned those comments, but Blinken said something else that was worse. The relevant passage:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>I also made clear that when Russia made this move, the United States and our allies and partners would impose\u00a0<strong>swift and severe costs<\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0<strong>individuals<\/strong>\u00a0and entities \u2013 inside and outside of Russia \u2013 that\u00a0<strong>provide political or economic support<\/strong>\u00a0to illegal attempts to change the status of Ukrainian territory\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We\u00a0<strong>will hold to account any individual<\/strong>, entity, or country that provides political or economic support for President Putin\u2019s illegal attempts to change the status of Ukrainian territory.\u00a0 In support of this commitment, the Departments of the Treasury and Commerce are releasing new guidance on heightened sanctions and export control risks for entities and individuals inside and outside of Russia that\u00a0<strong>support in any way<\/strong>\u00a0the Kremlin\u2019s sham referenda, purported annexation, and occupation of parts of Ukraine.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There\u2019s no way to know what a State Department official might believe meets the definitions of \u201cpolitical support,\u201d support \u201cin any way,\u201d\u00a0<strong>the \u201cKremlin\u2019s sham referenda,\u201d<\/strong> or any of a half-dozen phrases in that passage.
