Europe\u2019s Permanent Energy Crisis Gets Worse<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

The pipeline explosions I wrote about\u00a0<\/em>last week<\/em><\/a> were neither a beginning nor an end to Europe\u2019s economic woes. The \u201cinvisible scissors\u201d cutting all ties between Europe and the rest of Eurasia were already active since months \u2014 if not years \u2014 and did not stop for a minute ever since. However, now they\u2019ve become busier than ever.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It<\/span>increasingly looks like that the rather cruel metaphor I brought up\u00a0in April<\/a>, is now becoming a reality in front of our eyes \u2014 in a strictly figurative sense of course. As I wrote back then:<\/p>\n

Back in the age of shoguns and samurai, there was a rather bloody way a noble warrior could restore honor for himself or for his family by committing a form of voluntary\u00a0ritual suicide<\/a>. What contemporary societies rarely grasp, is that the person in question had to die no matter what. He had to choose between falling into enemy hands (and being tortured \u2014 then executed resulting in the loss of his and his family\u2019s honor), or performing this rather painful ritual by himself.<\/p>\n

After several decades of magical thinking and self-delusion Europe has now found itself in the same situation. Leaders of this once prosperous peninsula of Eurasia have now\u00a0decided to severe<\/a>\u00a0themselves from Russian fossil fuel supplies:\u00a0starting with coal in August<\/a>, then moving on to oil and gas. Lacking its own adequate supplies of energy carriers tough\u00a0this act will effectively self-terminate the EU economy \u2014 an act equivalent to a ritual suicide;<\/strong>\u00a0a desperate attempt to restore the continent\u2019s lost honor.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n
