But here goes: After more than a century of almost continual growth, the world\u2019s appetite for oil is peaking, and will soon enter terminal decline.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s hard to write, because those who\u2019ve called a top in\u00a0oil\u00a0have a forecasting record on a par with film producer Harry Warner\u2019s skepticism that people in the 1920s\u00a0wanted to see talking pictures.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"paywall\" data-align=\"center\" data-id=\"391680570\" data-image-size=\"column\" data-image-type=\"chart\" data-type=\"image\" data-widget-url=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/toaster\/v2\/charts\/5e72438f36312b7cfa7e36d4e8fd5e20.html?brand=view&amp;webTheme=view&amp;web=true&amp;hideTitles=true\">\n<div class=\"chart\" data-responsive=\"true\">\n<div class=\"chart-js\">\n<h3 id=\"running-on-empty\" class=\"chart__title\">Running on Empty<\/h3>\n<p class=\"chart__subtitle\">Liquid fuels production isn&#8217;t expected to regain its peak levels of 102.2 million barrels a day this year or next<\/p>\n<div class=\"chart__container\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/toaster\/v2\/charts\/5e72438f36312b7cfa7e36d4e8fd5e20.html?brand=view&amp;webTheme=view&amp;web=true&amp;hideTitles=true\" data-toaster-id=\"391680570\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/toaster\/v2\/charts\/5e72438f36312b7cfa7e36d4e8fd5e20.html?brand=view&amp;webTheme=view&amp;web=true&amp;hideTitles=true\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" data-toaster-id=\"391680570\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p class=\"chart__source\">Source: Energy Information Administration<\/p>\n<p class=\"chart__footnote\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paywall\">As far back as 1919, the chief geologist of the US Geological Survey wrote that domestic output \u2014\u00a0then running at about 960,000 barrels a day, about 6% of\u00a0levels nowadays \u2014 would\u00a0<a title=\"The Unmined Supply of Petroleum in the United States\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/44720504#metadata_info_tab_contents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">start falling within two to five years<\/a>. In the 2000s, a dearth of oilfield discoveries led to febrile worries that supplies were running out, before the shale\u00a0revolution prompted a surprise jump\u00a0in production. BP Plc in 2020 predicted that consumption\u00a0of liquid hydrocarbons\u00a0<a title=\"Peak Oil Era Is Suddenly Upon Us\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/graphics\/2020-peak-oil-era-is-suddenly-upon-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">would at best plateau<\/a>\u00a0for 15 years around the 97.9 million barrels a day mark it hit in 2019, before revising its forecast to a peak between\u00a0<a title=\"bp Energy Outlook: 2022 edition\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bp.com\/content\/dam\/bp\/business-sites\/en\/global\/corporate\/pdfs\/energy-economics\/energy-outlook\/bp-energy-outlook-2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the middle of this decade and 2030<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Through all that, oil demand has continued to grow as the indispensable energy carrier fueling rising global incomes and development.
