Greeks Face First Product Shortages As Cash Runs Out, “It’s Worse Than In 2012”<\/a><\/h3>\n

Just when you thought it was getting better\u00a0(or so you would believe if you listened to the mainstream media’s punditry)\u00a0<\/em>Greece faces what\u00a0ekathimerini reports<\/a>\u00a0is a\u00a0“situation worse than in 2012.”<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0From well-known Belgian beer to electronics equipment,\u00a0the first occurrences of shortages in imported goods and raw materials have arisen<\/strong>\u00a0as a result of Greek enterprises\u2019 inability to pay with cash in advance.<\/p>\n

In 2013, there were food riots as people could not afford the staples as a six-day strike led to food shortages…<\/a><\/p>\n

Hundreds of people jostled for free vegetables handed out by farmers in a symbolic protest earlier on Wednesday, trampling one man and prompting an outcry over the growing desperation created by economic crisis.<\/div>\n

Images of people struggling to seize bags of tomatoes and leeks thrown from a truck dominated television, triggering a bout of soul-searching over the new depths of poverty in the debt-laden country.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese images make me angry. Angry for a proud people who have no food to eat, who can\u2019t afford to keep warm, who can\u2019t make ends meet,\u201d said Kostas Barkas, a lawmaker from the leftist Syriza party.<\/p>\n

Other lawmakers from across the political spectrum decried the images \u201cof people on the brink of despair\u201d and the sense of \u201csadness for a proud people who have ended up like this\u201c.<\/p>\n

People have seen their living standards crumble as the country faces its sixth year of recession that has driven unemployment to record highs.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
