These days, my British friends ask me the same question, with the same faint tinge of terror in their voices. \u201cSo. How bad is it going to be?\u201d What they mean is\u2026well, let me try to explain why they\u2019re asking.<\/p>\n

Right about now, Britain\u2019s setting records. Not good ones. It\u2019s the rich world\u2019s\u00a0worst performing country in a stunning multitude of regards<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 falling incomes, crashing economy, skyrocketing inflation, dwindling confidence and optimism.\u00a0Twice<\/em>\u00a0as many people died in Britain\u00a0this<\/em>\u00a0summer of Covid\u00a0than they did last summer<\/a>. They were mostly elderly people, and that\u2019s a parable for what modern Britain\u2019s become: a stunningly cruel, indifferent, embittered society, inured to the grim reality of its own collapse.<\/p>\n

Britain is the world\u2019s preeminent bellwether of social collapse at this point in history.\u00a0<\/strong>No nation in the rich world \u2014 and barely any in the poor one, really \u2014 come close. The rest of the world is dusting itself off after a rough few years, and restarting the engines of progress. But in Britain? Well, the engines of regress are pumping. Literally \u2014\u00a0sewage into the rivers<\/a>. What kind of country wants to cover itself in its own \u2014 never mind.<\/p>\n

For some reason that the world can\u2019t quite fathom, Britain has decided to turn itself a kind of Neo Victorian dystopia, by way of American style ultra libertarianism.<\/mark>\u00a0Think about how baffling and strange this really is for a moment. The nation that was renowned for its NHS and BBC, which invented the\u00a0idea of the public park<\/a>\u00a0and the modern public library and museum. Now? It\u2019s the kind of place with would make Dickens entire cast of villains, from Uriah Heep to Fagin, cackle in morbid glee.<\/p>\n
