The state-owned company revealed that it lost 4.9 billion euros ($5.6 billion) in 2014, an enormous decline from the 500 million euro loss it posted the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>Weighing on the company is its much-heralded rector in Finland. The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.areva.com\/EN\/operations-2389\/finland-olkiluoto-3.html\">Olkiluoto 3 unit<\/a>\u00a0under construction in Finland was supposed to be completed in 2009, but it has since turned into a nightmare. Billed as the first Generation III+ pressurized water reactor \u2013 dubbed the Evolutionary Power Reactor (EPR) by Areva \u2013 the project was intended to demonstrate nuclear technology that had advanced well beyond the designs seen in today\u2019s operational power plants, which were built in the 1970\u2019s. Now expected to be completed in 2018, the decade of delay could<a href=\"http:\/\/oilprice.com\/Alternative-Energy\/Nuclear-Power\/Is-There-Any-Hope-Left-For-Nuclear-Energy.html\">double<\/a>\u00a0the reactor\u2019s eventual total cost.<\/p>\n<p>Also, Areva is building another reactor in Normandy that has suffered a similar fate. The Flamanville 3 is several years\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nucnet.org\/all-the-news\/2014\/11\/19\/areva-suspends-financial-targets-edf-confirms-flamanville-3-delays\">behind schedule<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 it may not come into operation until 2016 or 2017 after an original start date of 2012.
