In the United Kingdom, a grassroots protest movement has broken out in response to the ongoing energy crisis. With the bill from its failed national policies coming due, ordinary citizens are organizing campaigns to ensure they are not the ones left holding the bag. The\u00a0mission<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0Don\u2019t Pay UK\u00a0<\/em>is to gather at least one million commitments from Her Majesty\u2019s loyal subjects to simply stop paying their energy bills as of October 1, 2022. At the time of this writing,\u00a0Don\u2019t Pay UK<\/em>\u00a0has passed 130,000 signatures. We expect that number to grow.<\/p>\n

In reading a recent\u00a0profile<\/a>\u00a0of the movement by\u00a0Euronews Green<\/em>, we were struck by the framing of the crisis by some of the movement\u2019s organizers. This quote from the piece and the photo we have reproduced below caught our attention (emphasis added throughout):<\/p>\n

\u201cLewis Ford, an organiser from Hull, agrees the movement is \u2018a lot about solidarity\u2019, especially for those\u00a0forced to choose between heating their home and feeding their family<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u2018We\u2019re already talking about the idea of setting up warm banks, which is an absolutely preposterous idea,\u2019 the 31-year-old IT consultant tells Euronews Green. \u2018We’re one of the richest nations. So, it\u2019s not like there\u2019s no money, it\u2019s the fact that the money is being kept in one space<\/strong>.<\/em>\u2019\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Sadly for Mr. Ford and the well-intended but totally na\u00efve young woman holding out hope that the unicorn concept of \u201ccheaper cleaner greener\u201d energy is actually a thing, they are both victims of insidious propaganda…<\/p>\n
