American elites want magical technological fixes to climate change because they refuse to confront the truth that seriously addressing the problem would require limits to their own power and luxury.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n

Few of us want to face the climate mess. The numbers are scary and confusing, and the facts have never been reported in a way that actually generates public understanding. \u201cThe media are complacent while the world burns,\u201d Mark Hertsgaard and Kyle Pope declare in the\u00a0<\/em>Columbia Journalism Review<\/em><\/a>. There\u2019s plenty of data to back up this bold assertion: based on an analysis of 600\u00a0New York Times<\/em>\u00a0articles on climate change, a UC Berkeley\u00a0report<\/a>\u00a0states that \u201cthe vast majority contained none of the five basic climate facts,\u201d meaning that readers are left uneducated about the truth and scope of the problem. (The five criteria the researchers used are that global warming is happening, that burning fossil fuels produces greenhouse gases that create warming, that 90%+ of climate scientists agree on the human causes of warming, that there is now more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere than there has been for hundreds of thousands of years, and that warming is permanent.)<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not just a lack of effective information: many media movers and shakers claim that climate coverage is \u201ca\u00a0palpable ratings killer<\/a>\u201d in the first place, and so they tend to curtail or water down their coverage. Of course there are exceptions\u2014an article in\u00a0New York\u00a0<\/em>by David Wallace-Wells beat the supposed \u201ctraffic Kryptonite<\/a>\u201d curse (over 6 million hits, which led to his book\u00a0The Uninhabitable Earth)<\/em>. Wallace-Wells has stated that \u201cbeing alarmed is what the\u00a0facts demand<\/a>.\u201d …<\/p>\n
