Germany Rations Gas Amid Russian Cuts, Mandates Return To Coal For Electricity Production<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/header>\n

German Vice Chancellor and Economy Minister\u00a0Robert Habeck\u00a0 said Sunday that the\u00a0country will limit the use of natural gas for electricity production\u00a0<\/strong>amid concerns about possible shortages caused by a cut in supplies from Russia.<\/p>\n

As a member of the environmentalist Green Party,\u00a0Habeck pushed through legislation in April to\u00a0raise Germany\u2019s energy target to 80% renewables<\/strong><\/a>. He is also an\u00a0opponent of nuclear energy.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Habeck said that Germany will try to\u00a0compensate for the move by increasing the burning of coal, a more polluting fossil fuel.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cThat\u2019s bitter, but it\u2019s simply necessary in this situation to lower gas usage,\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The decision comes just days after Russian gas company Gazprom announced that it was sharply reducing supplies through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline for technical reasons, but which Habeck said appeared to be politically motivated.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s obvious that (Russian President Vladimir) Putin\u2019s strategy is to unsettle us by driving up the price and dividing us,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>Habeck said.<\/em><\/p>\n

Gas Reduction in Electricity Sector<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe situation on the gas market has deteriorated in recent days. The missing quantities can still be replaced, and the gas storage tanks are still being filled, albeit at high prices. Security of supply is currently guaranteed. But the situation is serious. We are therefore further strengthening precautions and taking additional measures to reduce gas consumption.
