World Has Just \u201910 Weeks\u2019 of Wheat Supplies Left in Storage, Analyst Warns<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

The world has only about 10 weeks of\u00a0wheat<\/a>\u00a0supplies left in storage amid the conflict in Ukraine and as India has moved to bar exports of wheat in recent weeks, a food insecurity expert says.<\/p>\n

Sara Menker, the CEO of agriculture analytics firm\u00a0Gro Intelligence<\/a>, told the\u00a0United Nations Security Council<\/a>\u00a0on May 19 that the Russia\u2013Ukraine war\u00a0\u201csimply added fuel to a fire that was long burning,\u201d saying that it is not the primary cause of the wheat shortage. Ukraine and Russia both produce close to about a third of the world\u2019s wheat.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to start by explicitly saying that the Russia\u2013Ukraine war did not start the food security crisis. It simply added fuel to a fire that was long burning. A crisis we detected tremors from long before the COVID 19 pandemic exposed the fragility of our supply chains,\u201d Menker said, according to a transcript.<\/p>\n

\u201cI share this because we believe it\u2019s important for you all to understand that even if the war were to end tomorrow, our food security problem isn\u2019t going away anytime soon without concerted action.\u201d<\/p>\n

In providing data, Menker said that due to price increases in major crops this year, it\u2019s made another\u00a0400 million worldwide \u201cfood insecure,\u201d adding that with wheat, the world \u201ccurrently only [has] 10 weeks of global consumption sitting in inventory around the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cConditions today are worse than those experienced in 2007 and 2008,\u201d she said. \u201cIt is important to note that the lowest grain inventory levels the world has ever seen are now occurring while access to fertilizers is highly constrained, and drought in wheat-growing regions around the world is the most extreme it\u2019s been in over 20 years…<\/p>\n
