{"id":62444,"date":"2022-04-14T04:17:12","date_gmt":"2022-04-14T09:17:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=62444"},"modified":"2022-04-14T04:17:12","modified_gmt":"2022-04-14T09:17:12","slug":"india-facing-widespread-blackouts-this-summer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=62444","title":{"rendered":"India Facing Widespread Blackouts This Summer"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"ArticleFull_header__Eyn7V\">\n<h3 class=\"ArticleFull_title__MEgbb\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/energy\/india-facing-widespread-blackouts-summer\">India Facing Widespread Blackouts This Summer<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"NodeContent_mainContent__t4rGu\">\n<div class=\"NodeContent_body__6iJOI NodeBody_container__hI8PI\">\n<p>India faces a persistent shortage of electricity over the next four months as rapid demand growth from air conditioners overwhelms the available generation on the network.<\/p>\n<p>India\u2019s grid reported a record load of 200,570 megawatts on July 7, 2021, at the height of last summer, according to the National Load Despatch Centre of the Power System Operation Corporation (POSOCO).<\/p>\n<p>But since the middle of March, the grid has routinely reported maximum loads above 195,000 MW, including a peak of 199,584 MW on April 8 &#8211; less than 0.5% below the record.<\/p>\n<p>In the evening, when there is no solar generation available and supplies are even more stretched, peak loads have hit a new record in recent days.<\/p>\n<p>Exceptionally high loads have arrived far earlier this year, well before the most intense period of summer heat, implying the grid is in trouble.<\/p>\n<p>In a symptom of the struggle to meet demand, the grid\u2019s frequency has faltered since mid-March, dropping persistently below target, with longer and more severe excursions below the safe operating range.<\/p>\n<p>Chronic under-frequency is a sign the grid cannot meet the full demand from customers and makes planned load-shedding or unplanned blackouts much more likely.<\/p>\n<p>India has a frequency target of 50.00 cycles per second (Hertz), with grid controllers tasked with keeping it steady between 49.90 Hz and 50.05 Hz to maintain the network in a safe and reliable condition.\u00a0<strong>Since the middle of March, frequency has averaged just 49.95 Hz and has been below the lower operating threshold more than 23% of the time.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On April 7, the\u00a0<em>average\u00a0<\/em>frequency fell as low as 49.84 Hz and frequency was below the lower threshold for 63% of the day, according to POSOCO data.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/india%20power%20grid%202.png?itok=NdzwYTg_\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/india%20power%20grid%202.png?itok=NdzwYTg_\" data-link-option=\"0\"><picture><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/india%20power%20grid%202.png?itok=NdzwYTg_\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"502b749a-cc5e-42f1-befb-c36634b1a93f\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/picture><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Frequency has been below target so often for so long in recent weeks it has sometimes appeared the system is operating according to a much lower informal target.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026click on the above link to read the rest of the article\u2026<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>India Facing Widespread Blackouts This Summer India faces a persistent shortage of electricity over the next four months as rapid demand growth from air conditioners overwhelms the available generation on the network.
