FBI Memos Suggest Agency Had Moles in Media<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

Investigator Roger Charles was combing through records of the FBI\u2019s Oklahoma City bombing investigation more than a decade ago, when he discovered a memo suggesting that someone working at ABC News provided a tip to the bureau a day after the deadly April 19, 1995, domestic terrorist attack.<\/p>\n

It appeared that\u00a0<\/span>a senior ABC News journalist had been\u00a0doubling as an FBI informant<\/a>. The memo made a few headlines in 2011, but quickly passed through the news cycle with little impact and hardly any coverage by major outlets.<\/p>\n

However, Charles\u2019s discovery stoked the curiosity of his friend, attorney Jesse Trentadue. The Utah resident was suing the FBI for records related to his brother\u2019s murder, and\u00a0began filing requests in 2012\u00a0to see if the bureau had other informants in the media, as well as places such as congressional offices, courts, churches, other government agencies, and the White House.<\/p>\n

Trentadue said the U.S. government\u2019s response shocked him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought they\u2019d come back and say, \u2018We would never do that because that would be illegal and unconstitutional,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cInstead, they came back and said, \u2018Yeah, we do that. We have manuals on that, but you can\u2019t have them because of national security.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The FBI fought against Trentadue for years in federal court to keep its manuals secret, and was ultimately successful. A federal judge dismissed the lawsuit in 2015.<\/p>\n

However, Trentadue said the litigation helped him piece together what he calls the FBI\u2019s \u201csensitive informant program.\u201d According to his\u00a0lawsuit<\/a>\u00a0over the matter, this program is used to place informants in the national media, among other institutions.<\/p>\n
