Weaning its economy off Russian energy without triggering a major domestic crisis\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/energy\/basf-ceo-warns-germany-total-collapse-if-russian-gas-supply-cut\">and &#8220;total collapse.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>US equity futures tumbled on the news as investors braced for more international fallout from increasing tensions between Europe and the Russians, which could lead to even higher energy prices.<\/p>\n<p>* * *<\/p>\n<p>Not to be outdone by tiny Lithuania (which claims to have officially weaned itself off Russian gas imports by building an LNG terminal), the European Commission has devised a controversial proposal to ban imports of Russian coal, along with a host of other measures comprising a new sanctions package to be introduced on Tuesday, according to reports from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/europe-to-propose-fresh-sanctions-on-russia-11649152947\">WSJ,<\/a>\u00a0Reuters and a host of other media outlets.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/eu_vd.jpg?itok=ulvKMJB9\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/eu_vd.jpg?itok=ulvKMJB9\" data-link-option=\"0\"><picture><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"inline-images image-style-inline-images\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/eu_vd.jpg?itok=ulvKMJB9\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"323\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"0a052421-d4aa-40b9-b1ee-4ea9d7cc602d\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/picture><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Along with banning imports of Russian coal, the package also calls for an import ban on rubber, chemicals and other products from Russia worth up to \u20ac9 billion a year.<\/p>\n<p>If passed, the proposal would mark the first energy sanctions on Russia since the start of the conflict in Ukraine.
