{"id":6189,"date":"2015-03-04T06:56:29","date_gmt":"2015-03-04T11:56:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=6189"},"modified":"2015-03-04T06:56:29","modified_gmt":"2015-03-04T11:56:29","slug":"climate-change-is-likely-factor-in-syrias-conflict","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=6189","title":{"rendered":"Climate change is likely factor in Syria\u2019s conflict"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"single-post-h1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatenewsnetwork.net\/climate-change-likely-factor-syrias-conflict\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Climate change is likely factor in Syria\u2019s conflict<\/b><\/a><\/h3>\n<p class=\"first-para\"><strong>Researchers say climate change probably caused the savage drought that affected Syria\u00a0<\/strong><strong>nearly a decade ago \u2212 and helped to spark the country\u2019s current civil war.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>LONDON, 2 March, 2015<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 In a dire chain of cause and effect, the drought that devastated parts of Syria from 2006 to 2010 was probably the result of climate change driven by human activities, a new study says.<\/p>\n<p>And the study\u2019s authors think that the drought may also have contributed to the outbreak of Syria\u2019s uprising in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>The drought, which was the worst ever recorded in the region, ravaged agriculture in the breadbasket region of northern Syria, driving dispossessed farmers to the cities where poverty, government mismanagement and other factors created the unrest that exploded four years ago.
