Some people worry that degrowth introduces confusion because it is not, in fact, the opposite of growth. When people say \u2018growth\u2019 they normally mean growth in GDP, so one might reasonably assume that degrowth is likewise focused on reducing GDP. Proponents of degrowth are therefore condemned to perpetually clarify that degrowth is not about reducing GDP, but rather about reducing material and energy throughput.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<section class=\"post body paragraphs wrapper\">\n<p id=\"4d38\" class=\"iy iz gs ja b jb jc ht jd je jf hw jg jh ji jj jk jl jm jn jo jp jq jr js jt gl ff\" aria-label=\"post body paragraph\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">But in our present\/future\u00a0<a class=\"au ix\" href=\"https:\/\/econsystemsthinking.medium.com\/systems-thinking-through-climate-change-5-positive-feedback-loops-173596568434\" rel=\"noopener\">environmental<\/a>\u00a0situation I would argue degrowth is inevitable. We can choose\u00a0<em class=\"ju\">what\u00a0<\/em>we degrow, not\u00a0<em class=\"ju\">whether\u00a0<\/em>we degrow.<\/p>\n<p id=\"c619\" class=\"iy iz gs ja b jb jc ht jd je jf hw jg jh ji jj jk jl jm jn jo jp jq jr js jt gl ff\" aria-label=\"post body paragraph\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Let\u2019s compare two potential plans for the future: the degrowth plan and the status quo plan. The twist is that both will be framed in terms of what they seek to degrow.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"gl gm gn go gp\" aria-label=\"post body section\">\n<p id=\"d194\" class=\"kj kk gs cg kl km kn ko kp kq kr ks kt jh ku kv kw jl kx ky kz jp la lb lc ld ff\"><strong>Degrowth:<\/strong><\/p>\n<section class=\"post body paragraphs wrapper\">\n<p id=\"be0f\" class=\"iy iz gs ja b jb le ht jd je lf hw jg jh lg jj jk jl lh jn jo jp li jr js jt gl ff\" aria-label=\"post body paragraph\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">As stated above degrowth does not believe in abstractly and arbitrarily reducing GDP as an end goal. Segments of the economy which are necessary and benefit humans should continue to grow, while industries which do not benefit lifespan or happiness should be reduced such as\u00a0<a class=\"au ix\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jasonhickel.org\/blog\/tag\/degrowth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">\u201cfossil fuels, SUVs, advertising, planned obsolescence, McMansions, arms, industrial beef, private jets, etc).\u201d<\/a>\u00a0I would add Fast Fashion and crypto which the global south has already taken the lead in\u00a0<a class=\"au ix\" href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/next\/2022\/01\/11\/bitcoin-ban-these-are-the-countries-where-crypto-is-restricted-or-illegal2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">banning<\/a>. Overall this\u00a0<a class=\"au ix\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/may\/27\/four-day-working-week-would-slash-uk-carbon-footprint-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">reduced consumption should be justified by more leisure<\/a>\u00a0which would also reduce emissions.<\/p>\n<p id=\"eda9\" class=\"iy iz gs ja b jb jc ht jd je jf hw jg jh ji jj jk jl jm jn jo jp jq jr js jt gl ff\" aria-label=\"post body paragraph\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Degrowth policies must not happen in isolation; they must be paired with various social programs to reduce the inequality that our resource use perpetuates&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"gl gm gn go gp\" aria-label=\"post body section\"><\/section>\n<section class=\"gl gm gn go gp\" aria-label=\"post body section\">\u2026click on the above link to read the rest of the article\u2026<\/p>\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Degrowth is the Future.
