{"id":61839,"date":"2022-02-10T07:18:18","date_gmt":"2022-02-10T12:18:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=61839"},"modified":"2022-02-10T07:18:18","modified_gmt":"2022-02-10T12:18:18","slug":"how-empires-die","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=61839","title":{"rendered":"How Empires Die"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oftwominds.com\/blogfeb22\/empires-die2-22.html\">How Empires Die<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><i>When the state \/ empire loses the ability to recognize and solve core problems of security and fairness, it will be replaced by another arrangement that is more adaptable and adept at solving problems.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>From a systems perspective, nation-states and empires arise when they are superior solutions to security<\/b>\u00a0compared to whatever arrangement they replace: feudalism, warlords, tribal confederations, etc.<\/p>\n<p><b>States and empires fail when they are no longer the solution, they are the problem.<\/b>\u00a0As the book\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1597260657?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=charleshughsm-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1597260657\" target=\"resource\" rel=\"noopener\">The Upside of Down: Catastrophe, Creativity, and the Renewal of Civilization<\/a>\u00a0explains, when the dissolution of the state \/ empire becomes the pain-reducing solution, the inhabitants withdraw their support and the empire loses its grip and expires.<\/p>\n<p><b>As I explain in my new book,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B09MD353ND\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B09MD353ND&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=charleshughsm-20&amp;linkId=f994eecd583e41ac46c101eeb4c7cddb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Crisis, National Renewal<\/a>, states and markets are\u00a0<i>problem-solving structures<\/i>.<\/b>\u00a0These structures solve problems by optimizing adaptability and\u00a0<i>beneficial synergies<\/i>\u00a0that reinforce one another as evolutionary advances.<\/p>\n<p><b>The rise of the middle class is an example of\u00a0<i>beneficial synergies<\/i><\/b>: as this new class gains access to credit, expertise, trade, enterprise and pricing power for their labor, they have the means to\u00a0<i>transform their labor into capital<\/i>\u00a0by saving earnings and investing the capital in assets, new enterprises, etc. which then generate income from capital which fuels synergistic increases in credit, expertise, assets and income from investments.<\/p>\n<p><b>States \/ empires fail and expire when they elevate the\u00a0<i>fatal synergies<\/i>\u00a0created by self-serving elites.<\/b>\u00a0Rather than encourage the dynamics of adaptation&#8211;competition, transparency, accountability, experimentation and dissent&#8211; the elites suppresses these forces as threats to their monopolies, cartels and wealth.<\/p>\n<p><b>Stripped of adaptability and\u00a0<i>beneficial synergies<\/i>, the state \/ empire is no longer able to solve problems.
