In looking at how we adapt to energy crises, or climate change, we have to focus on what relatively creates the greatest impact \u2013 nationally and globally.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a big fuss at the moment about a\u00a0<a id=\"lnk01\" class=\"os\" title=\"goto Guardian On-line: \u2018Britain\u2019s cost of living crisis means that for some, \u2018getting by\u2019 will become a luxury\u2019, 26th January 2022 (opens in a new window)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2022\/jan\/26\/cost-of-living-crisis-failing-social-security-system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018cost of living crisis\u2019<\/a><sup>1<\/sup>, and with it the expanding spectre of\u00a0<a id=\"lnk02\" class=\"os\" title=\"goto Guardian On-line: \u20186m UK homes may be unable to pay energy bills after price hike, charity warns\u2019, 1st January 2022 (opens in a new window)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2022\/jan\/01\/6m-homes-uk-pay-energy-bills-price-hike-fuel-poverty\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fuel poverty<\/a><sup>2<\/sup>. It\u2019s not possible to talk about either without connecting to energy and climate change. More importantly, this debate has traditionally ignored the \u2018injustice\u2019 behind the thoroughly unequal levels of consumption in Britain, and the world, and the deep connections this that has to both poverty and climate change.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"one\" class=\"blog_section\">\n<h4 class=\"heading\">Champagne, anyone?<\/h4>\n<p class=\"introduction\">There\u2019s a graph I love to throw at people \u2013 called the \u2019Champagne Glass Graph\u2019. It was first outlined in the United Nation\u2019s\u00a0<a id=\"lnk03\" class=\"os\" title=\"goto UN Development Programme: \u2018Human Development Report\u2019, 1992\" href=\"http:\/\/hdr.undp.org\/en\/reports\/global\/hdr1992\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Human Development Report<\/a><sup>3<\/sup>\u00a0in 1992. That work was updated in 2015 by Oxfam, as part of their\u00a0<a id=\"lnk04\" class=\"os\" title=\"goto Oxfam: \u2018Extreme Carbon Inequality\u2019, 2015 (PDF file opens in a new window)\" href=\"https:\/\/www-cdn.oxfam.org\/s3fs-public\/file_attachments\/mb-extreme-carbon-inequality-021215-en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>\u2018Extreme Carbon Inequality\u2019<\/em><\/a><sup>4<\/sup>\u00a0report.<\/p>\n<p>The United Nations, because it is made-up of nation states, is fixated by the \u2018nation state\u2019.
