consequential\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www2.epa.gov\/hfstudy\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a>\u00a0of the risks that hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, poses to American drinking water\u00a0supplies.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>This is about using the best possible science to do what the American people expect the\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">EPA<\/span>\u00a0to do \u2013 ensure that the health of their communities and families are protected,\u201d Paul Anastas, Assistant Administrator for the agency&#8217;s Office of Research and Development,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/yosemite.epa.gov\/opa\/admpress.nsf\/48f0fa7dd51f9e9885257359003f5342\/0766a135162a9a90852578b8005d56da!OpenDocument\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a02011.<\/p>\n<p>But the\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">EPA<\/span>&#8216;s study has been largely shaped and re-shaped by the very industry it is supposed to investigate, as energy company officials were allowed to edit planning documents, insisted on vetting agency contractors, and demanded to review federal scientist&#8217;s field notes, photographs and laboratory results prior to publication, according to a review by DeSmog of over 3,000 pages of previously undisclosed emails, confidential draft study plans and other\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/1678647-greenpeace-foia-returns.html#document\/p1\/a205544\" target=\"_blank\">internal documents<\/a>obtained through open records\u00a0requests.<\/p>\n<p>Company officials imposed demands so infeasible that the\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">EPA<\/span>\u00a0ultimately dropped a key goal of the research, their plans to
