(Library of the Chilean National Congress\/Wikipedia)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>T<\/strong>hroughout the long, documented\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_involvement_in_regime_change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">history<\/a>\u00a0of the United States illegally overthrowing governments of foreign lands to build a global empire there has emerged three ways Washington broadly carries out \u201cregime change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>From Above.\u00a0<\/strong>If the targeted leader has been democratically elected and enjoys popular support, the C.I.A. has worked with elite groups, such as the military, to overthrow him (sometimes through assassination).\u00a0 Among several examples is the first C.I.A-backed\u00a0<a title=\"March 1949 Syrian coup d'\u00e9tat\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/March_1949_Syrian_coup_d%27%C3%A9tat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coup d\u2019\u00e9tat<\/a>, on March 30, 1949,\u00a0 just 18 months after the agency\u2019s founding, when Syrian Army Colonel\u00a0<a title=\"Husni al-Za'im\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Husni_al-Za%27im\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Husni al-Za\u2019im<\/a>\u00a0overthrew the elected president,\u00a0<a title=\"Shukri al-Quwatli\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shukri_al-Quwatli\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shukri al-Quwatli.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The C.I.A. in 1954 toppled the elected President\u00a0<a title=\"Jacobo \u00c1rbenz\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jacobo_%C3%81rbenz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jacobo \u00c1rbenz<\/a>\u00a0 of Guatemala, who was replaced with a military dictator. In 1961, just three days before the inauguration of President John F. Kennedy, who favored his release, Congolese President Patrice Lumumba was assassinated with C.I.A. assistance, bringing military strongman\u00a0<a title=\"Mobutu Sese Seko\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mobutu_Sese_Seko\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mobutu Sese Seko<\/a>\u00a0to power. \u00a0In 1973, the U.S. backed Chilean General Augusto Pinochet to overthrow and kill the democratically-elected, socialist President Salvador Allende, setting up a military dictatorship, one of many U.S.-installed military dictatorships of that era in Latin America under\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Operation_Condor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Operation Condor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>From Below.<\/strong>\u00a0If the targeted government faces genuine popular unrest, the U.S. will foment and organize it to topple the leader, elected or otherwise.\u00a0 1958-59 anti-communist<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vimochana_Samaram\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0protests<\/a> in Kerala, India, locally supported by the Congress Party and the Catholic Church, were funded by the C.I.A., leading to the removal of the elected communist government&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u2026click on the above link to read the rest of the article\u2026<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Three Types of US \u2018Regime Change\u2019 When the U.S. overthrows a foreign government it either works from the top down, the bottom up, or through military invasion, writes Joe Lauria.
