Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell has led the U.S. government\u2019s monetary policy to this point.<\/p>\n<p>Now he\u2019s attempting a nearly impossible feat\u2026<\/p>\n<p>He will need to thread the needle\u00a0<em>between<\/em>\u00a0the two economic disasters, between the frying pan and the fire, to return the U.S. economy to any form of sustainable prosperity.<\/p>\n<p>Is that kind of miracle even possible?<\/p>\n<p><strong>The frying pan: 40-year-record-high inflation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We will start with the obvious issue:\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/cpi.nr0.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">December\u2019s inflation report of 7%<\/a>\u00a0year-over-year price increases<\/strong>. That\u2019s at the end\u00a0<em>an entire year<\/em>\u00a0where inflation rose steadily for eleven of twelve months. August, the exception, saw a 0.1% decline.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"entered lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/embed\/?s=cpi+yoy&amp;v=202201121402v20200908&amp;h=300&amp;w=600&amp;ref=\/united-states\/inflation-cpi\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" data-rocket-lazyload=\"fitvidscompatible\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/embed\/?s=cpi+yoy&amp;v=202201121402v20200908&amp;h=300&amp;w=600&amp;ref=\/united-states\/inflation-cpi\" data-ll-status=\"loaded\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/united-states\/inflation-cpi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In addition, what Powell endlessly assured us was merely \u201ctransitory\u201d inflation, a \u201cblip,\u201d caused by \u201csupply chain snarls\u201d and so on? It\u2019s the\u00a0<strong>highest we\u2019ve seen in 40 years<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Most of our readers who have a little gray in their hair may remember how grim the stagflationary crisis of the late 70s and early 80s was. However, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/library\/stories\/2019\/06\/median-age-does-not-tell-the-whole-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">average American is only 38 years old<\/a>. They most likely have\u00a0<em>no idea<\/em>\u00a0what we\u2019re facing, even while watching their personal expenses go up month after month.<\/p>\n<p>And make no mistake, those expenses have gone up quite a bit for virtually everyone.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/cpi.t02.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS) report<\/a>\u00a0revealed the prices that rose the most in December 2021 :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gasoline +49.6%<\/li>\n<li>Fuel oil, and other fuels for heating +48.9% (just in time for the coldest days of winter, too)<\/li>\n<li>Natural gas: +24.1%<\/li>\n<li>Meats, poultry, fish, and eggs: +12.5%<\/li>\n<li>Electricity: +6.3%<\/li>\n<li>Housing +4.1%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you find this list depressing, I\u2019m afraid your solace isn\u2019t immune to this trend\u2026 Distilled spirits (excluding whiskey) rose 3.4% in price.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026click on the above link to read the rest of the article\u2026<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fed Chair Faces the Ultimate Lose-Lose Decision Photo by\u00a0Vadim Sadovski The U.S. economy teeters between two catastrophes: wild and untamed hyperinflation that turns cash into wallpaper, or an epic crash that would make 2008 look like a day at the beach.
