Germany closes half its remaining nuclear power plants<\/a><\/h3>\n

The shutdowns of three plants take place as Europe faces one of its worst-ever energy crises and as support for nuclear as a low carbon energy is, once again, on the rise.<\/p>\n

Germany is to shut down three nuclear power plants on Friday, as part of the country’s phase-out of nuclear energy.<\/p>\n

The closures take place as Europe faces one of its worst-ever energy crises and as\u00a0nuclear power is, once again, gaining support<\/a>\u00a0as it produces\u00a0significantly less carbon dioxide.<\/p>\n

The plants\u00a0in\u00a0Brokdorf in the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein<\/a>, Grohnde in Lower Saxony and Unit C at Gundremmingen in Bavaria in the south are being taken off the grid.<\/p>\n

The decommissioning process will take two decades and cost \u20ac1.1 billion ($1.25 billion) per plant.<\/p>\n

Where does this leave nuclear in Germany?<\/strong><\/p>\n

This means that in 2022, Germany will have just\u00a0three nuclear power\u00a0plants \u2014 in the states of Bavaria, Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg and Lower Saxony.<\/p>\n

They are due to\u00a0cease production in exactly a year’s time, cutting nuclear energy output by around four gigawatts \u2014 equivalent to the power\u00a0produced by 1,000 wind turbines.<\/p>\n

However, two plants that produce fuel and fuel elements for export may continue to operate.<\/p>\n

The closures will officially end\u00a0the nuclear\u00a0phase-out for domestic energy production started under former German Chancellor Angela Merkel.<\/p>\n

Merkel’s\u00a0government made the decision\u00a0in 2011 after the accident at the Fukushima atomic power plant in Japan.<\/p>\n

An earthquake\u00a0and tsunami destroyed the coastal plant in the world’s worst nuclear\u00a0disaster since Chernobyl 25 years earlier.<\/p>\n
