Canada Admits To Secretly Tracking 33 Million Phones During Covid-19 Lockdown<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/header>\n

Canada – which has a population of 38 million – has admitted to secretly tracking\u00a033 million phones<\/strong>\u00a0during the Covid-19 lockown,\u00a0<\/strong>according to the\u00a0<\/em>National Post<\/a><\/em>, citing\u00a0Blacklock’s Reporter<\/em><\/a>\u00a0which first noted the disclosure.<\/p>\n

The country’s Public Health Agency (PHAC) did so to assess “the public\u2019s responsiveness during lockdown measures,” according to the report.<\/p>\n

In March, the Agency awarded a contract to the\u00a0Telus Data For Good<\/a>\u00a0program to provide \u201cde-identified and aggregated data\u201d of movement trends in Canada. The contract expired in October, and PHAC no longer has access to the location data, the spokesperson said. -National Post<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

“Evidence is coming in from many sources, from countries around the world, that what was seen as a huge surveillance surge \u2014 post 9\/11 \u2014 is now completely upstaged by pandemic surveillance<\/strong>,” according to\u00a0“Pandemic Surveillance”<\/em>\u00a0author David Lyon, the former director of the Surveillance Studies Centre and Queen’s University in Ontario. “I think that\u00a0the Canadian public will find out about many other such unauthorized surveillance initiatives<\/strong>\u00a0before the pandemic is over\u2014and afterwards.”<\/p>\n

Location and movement data was purchased from Canadian telecom giant Telus in order\u00a0to “understand possible links between the movement of populations within Canada and the spread of COVID-19,”\u00a0<\/strong>according to an agency spokesperson, who said that the mobility data analysis “helps to advance public health objectives.”<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, PHAC intends to continue tracking population movement for at least\u00a0the next five years<\/strong>\u00a0to monitor behavior concerning “other infectious diseases, chronic disease prevention and mental health,” the spokesperson added.<\/p>\n
