As the executive director of the Center for Energy Studies at Louisiana State University, he has spent the last 30 years pinpointing the industry\u2019s challenges and theorizing around it\u2019s rapidly changing future.<\/p>\n<p>This is what he wants you to know: The energy transition from fossil fuels to solar and wind sources is real. \u201cIt\u2019s happening and it\u2019s gonna continue to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"hang-punc-medium\">\u201cAt this point, It doesn\u2019t matter if you\u2019re right, wrong, for, or against,\u201d said Dismukes. \u201cPeople and industries are making, not just hundreds of millions, but billion-dollar decisions based on the belief that this transition is here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/presidential-actions\/2021\/12\/08\/executive-order-on-catalyzing-clean-energy-industries-and-jobs-through-federal-sustainability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">creating<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 and taking away \u2013 jobs,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/grist.org\/energy\/spiking-gas-prices-are-a-preview-of-an-energy-transition-gone-wrong\/\">swaying the economy<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/grist.org\/transportation\/at-cop26-pete-buttigieg-makes-a-pitch-to-decarbonize-american-transport\/\">transforming how we commute<\/a>. The transition is also killing refineries, to the sounds of praise from environmental groups and uncertainty from the thousands of oil industry workers.<\/p>\n<p>In January 2020, a few months before the first coronavirus pandemic shutdown, the American oil refining industry reached its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=46216\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">highest capacity peak<\/a>\u00a0in history. It didn\u2019t last long. Within months,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=48636\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">six refineries<\/a>, including the Philadelphia Energy Solutions refinery in Philadelphia \u2013 the 13th largest in the country \u2013 shut off oil production. By December, U.S. oil consumption reached a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=49016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">25-year low<\/a>.
