But agriculture\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s43016-021-00225-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">produces<\/a>\u00a0nearly one-quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n<p>A potential antidote to harmful monocultures is a form of community farming invented back in the 1970s: permaculture. Permaculture is not just about farming; it incorporates economic and social principles.<\/p>\n<p>I am an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sociology.utk.edu\/faculty\/ergas.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">environmental sociologist<\/a>, and I have witnessed permaculture working in two urban farming communities. I study ways that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.ssresearch.2012.03.008\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">environmental justice, global development and social equity<\/a>\u00a0affect climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Permaculture\u2019s three main tenets \u2013 caring for the Earth, caring for the people and sharing the surplus \u2013 offer a potential path toward climate justice, which is a response to well-researched phenomena that climate change disproportionately harms underprivileged groups in economic, public health and other ways, and solutions to climate change should include adaptation strategies\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/yaleclimateconnections.org\/2020\/07\/what-is-climate-justice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">designed specifically for underprivileged groups<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I spent time at two communities in the Pacific Northwest and in Cuba during the fieldwork for my book\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/global.oup.com\/academic\/product\/surviving-collapse-9780197544105?q=ergas&amp;lang=en&amp;cc=us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cSurviving Collapse.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0I witnessed how the communities worked to cut emissions and adapt to climate change in two ways: with egalitarian social organization and regenerative farming techniques.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Permaculture was born in Australia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the 1970s, two Australian naturalists, Bill Mollison and David Holmgren, invented permaculture, a method of growing that considers the natural ecosystem and the community.
