They had dimmed even further by the time the prominent climate activist Vanessa Nakate of Uganda spoke from the main stage on the Glasgow conference\u2019s next-to-last day.<\/p>\n<p>Nakate\u00a0<a class=\"content-link external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/article-powerful-voice-of-ugandan-vanessa-nakate-helps-reframe-climate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chided<\/a>\u00a0her audience for sleepwalking toward catastrophe: \u201cWe see business leaders and investors flying into COP on private jets. We see them making fancy speeches. We hear about new pledges and promises. \u2026 I have come here to tell you that we don\u2019t believe you.\u201d She added, \u201cI am here to say, prove us wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the summit, people of all ages and backgrounds had rallied in the streets outside to demand effective climate action, climate justice, an end to exploitation and other policies through which the world\u2019s governments might prove Nakate wrong.<\/p>\n<p>On Nov. 5, more than 8,000 children, teenagers, parents and teachers marched through the city, calling on the generation now in power not to ruin the future for generations who follow. The next day, a surge of more than 100,000 climate marchers demanded an end to fossil fuel investments, a global conversion to renewable energy financed by wealthy countries and reparations for Indigenous communities.<\/p>\n<p>Tuntiak Katan, a member of the Shuar nation in Ecuador,\u00a0<a class=\"content-link external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ipsnews.net\/2021\/11\/glasgow-indigenous-people-pound-table-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reminded<\/a>\u00a0reporters that \u201cIndigenous peoples already protect 950 million hectares of land worldwide.\u201d Affluent nations, he said, must \u201cabandon extractivism and get the oil, mining and agribusiness companies out of our territories, and apply a holistic vision, combined with the vision of the Indigenous peoples.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Glasgow marchers\u2019 goals were both necessary and achievable, but they knew all too well that fossilized COP summits have failed the world 25 times since 1995, and COP26 would be no different.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026click on the above link to read the rest of the article\u2026<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To keep fossil carbon out of the air, just stop pulling it out of the Earth Rick Nease \/ The Detroit Free Press \/ MCT Expectations for the COP26 climate summit were always low.
