(Ricardo Daniel Maldonado, CC BY-SA 4.0, Wikimedia Commons)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>L<\/strong>ast month M\u00e9xico\u2019s Supreme Court provided hope for biodiversity, especially in the Global South, while flaming fear for\u00a0seed companies.\u00a0In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1fiYbsVGG-0f_orHa0muHACxRxvnbYInA\/view\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1fiYbsVGG-0f_orHa0muHACxRxvnbYInA\/view&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1637314321560000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3y7IxKung3im7a4bY09Qdr\">historic step<\/a>, it ruled for corn advocates and against genetically modified (GMO) corn. The decision was a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latinorebels.com\/2020\/09\/16\/fightinggmocorn\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.latinorebels.com\/2020\/09\/16\/fightinggmocorn\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1637314321560000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1S8DqDhauNByrUFALtJDT3\">momentous act<\/a>\u00a0in country where\u00a0<em>ma\u00edz<\/em>\u00a0(corn) carries daily and sacred significance.<\/p>\n<p>This promises a way out of stale GMO debates that plague us. One side argues that genetic changes to seeds increase harvests. Seed companies and industrial agriculture make up this side. Another side says GMOs damage plant DNA.<\/p>\n<p>Small-scale farmers and environmentalists stand on this side. Neither addresses the other.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>This standstill keeps GMO policies ineffective. The court\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gob.mx\/semarnat\/prensa\/buenas-noticias-a-favor-del-derecho-humano-al-medio-ambiente-sano-de-las-y-los-mexicanos\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.gob.mx\/semarnat\/prensa\/buenas-noticias-a-favor-del-derecho-humano-al-medio-ambiente-sano-de-las-y-los-mexicanos&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1637314321560000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2xl_H2wEX9CuYFGn6-HU64\">decision<\/a>\u00a0offers a path out of this by cutting at seed company positions.<\/p>\n<p>We should follow slow grown Mexican resistance to GMOs.<\/p>\n<p>By emphasizing biodiversity, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/7kbzv4\/mexico-rejected-appeals-for-gmo-corn-bayer-monsanto\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/7kbzv4\/mexico-rejected-appeals-for-gmo-corn-bayer-monsanto&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1637314321560000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3NYzinEmDQCeXVNXkHsiPC\">ruling<\/a>\u00a0fuels sustainable farming worldwide.\u00a0In legal terms,\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jornada.com.mx\/notas\/2021\/10\/13\/politica\/determina-scjn-que-continue-suspension-de-siembra-de-maiz-transgenico\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.jornada.com.mx\/notas\/2021\/10\/13\/politica\/determina-scjn-que-continue-suspension-de-siembra-de-maiz-transgenico\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1637314321560000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0kRmLzzY7c2nlGwu74ySg6\">decision<\/a>\u00a0found that it is constitutional for courts to block commercial permits for GMO corn.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Seed companies, like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jornada.com.mx\/notas\/2021\/10\/13\/politica\/determina-scjn-que-continue-suspension-de-siembra-de-maiz-transgenico\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.jornada.com.mx\/notas\/2021\/10\/13\/politica\/determina-scjn-que-continue-suspension-de-siembra-de-maiz-transgenico\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1637314321560000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0kRmLzzY7c2nlGwu74ySg6\">Monsanto, Syngenta, Dow, and PHI<\/a>,\u00a0need these to sell seeds in\u00a0M\u00e9xico. These agrochemical companies pursue a global push for GMO agriculture, not just in\u00a0M\u00e9xico.
