After a Covid-related postponement, it was held this year in Glasgow, Scotland between October 31 and November 12. <a href=\"https:\/\/pureportal.coventry.ac.uk\/en\/persons\/chris-maughan\">Dr Chris Maughan<\/a>\u00a0has been in Glasgow for the first week of the event and reflects on the links between \u2018corporate greenwash\u2019 and the \u2018net zero\u2019 agenda, as well as what this means for social movements seeking just and agroecological transitions.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content content\">\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">COP is a notoriously difficult process to grasp \u2013 is it genuinely a space of negotiation, or just political theatre? And where does it happen? Is it in the negotiating arena of the \u2018Blue Zone\u2019, or is it somewhere else? Should we look to the \u2018fringe\u2019 events, the streets, or even Twitter to follow its tangled process?<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">While some impressive noises have been coming out of the Blue Zone this week \u2013 commitments to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-59088498\">halt deforestation<\/a>\u00a0and reduce\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2295810-cop26-105-countries-pledge-to-cut-methane-emissions-by-30-per-cent\/\">methane emissions<\/a>\u00a0by 2030, for example \u2013 or even the $100bn per year of \u2018Climate Aid\u2019 promised (but not yet delivered) to the Global South \u2013 similarly attention-grabbing noises could also be heard outside these spaces, from social movements\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cop26coalition.org\/peoples-summit\/\">articulating their own visions of climate justice<\/a>, or those emphatically rejecting the mainstream process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">As COP26 draws to a close, this blog offers some reflections on the fraught relationship between the mainstream process and the social movements, and what this means for the fight for a just and agroecological transition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COP26: A \u2018Greenwash festival\u2019?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">Even before the event kicked off, activists were already\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eco-bot.net\/\">preparing to highlight the inevitable wave of greenwash<\/a> that would envelop COP26, warning of undue influence of the corporate sector&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u2026click on the above link to read the rest of the article\u2026<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>COP26 \u2013 Caught in a Net: Agriculture, Climate Change, and the Decarbonisation Agenda The 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP26, is the 26th of its kind.
